Chateau de Bardouly was built in the reign of Henry IV and is situated halfway up a limestone hill above the Dropt River. This Perigordian Chateau brims with the charm and nobility of its 400 years of existence. The house maintains its original features including a panelled dining room and library that were installed by the same artisan that completed the state rooms at Versailles; the house boasts priceless antiques but at the same time maintains all the modern amenities of a comfortable family home. Enjoy absolute quiet and privacy in the meticulously maintained 100 acres of exquisite wooded hills, fields, orchards and park with its ancient oaks, cedars and chestnut trees. Henri Miller described best the Dordogne where Chateau de Bardouly is located as ‘the Paradise of France, this beautiful area of South-West of France, where the landscapes seduce by their softness, by the harmony between nature and architecture; where the climate is temperate and welcoming; where the people still seem to have time’.
The house is of significant historical interest as a place visited by Michel de Montaigne, Charles de Gaulle, and John D Rockefeller amongst others. The house has been in the same family for over 400 years. The 'patron' at the time of the Second World War set up the resistance movement in the South of France and was the first to make contact with Charles de Gaulle and his government in exile in London. Bardouly was a significant centre for the coordination of the resistence and helping people to freedom in Spain throughout the war.
We have been running yoga retreats and teatcher trainings for the past 4 years (although we have owned the propety for 20). We originally partnered on teacher trainings with Yoga Works in the U.S. who helped us to design our professional indoor studio which is 800 square feet and our outdoor wooden platform. We are equipped with all props including mats, blankets, bolsters, blocks, straps, whiteboard and skeleton. We work with teachers from all over the world including Europe, the U.S., Australia, and Canada. We have a professional French chef who creates delicious bio dynamic farm to table meals and can cater for any dietary requirements. We also allow teachers to bring their own chefs, therapists and staff if they so wish.
The house has 11 bedroooms all with ensuite bath or shower rooms. There is a professional treatment room for massages, facials, and reflexology. The Chateau sits in 100 acres of gardens, forests and fields and has a heated swimming pool and hard surface tennis court. We work with several local providers to create bespoke cultural tours and winery visits if you so please. We also host wine tasting evenings at the Chateau with a local expert.
We have hosted scores of delighted guests over a number of years and look forward to working with you to create a magical retreat.
