An exotic journey of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean.
Sri Lanka is a lush tropical island country just South of India with a history dating back to the birth of time. Once called “Tambapanni” (Copper-red earth) because the early explorers’ feet and hands were turned red by the richness of the soil, at another time it was a destination on the Silk road known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, in myth and legend it was said to be the fabled home of Ravana, the Hindu ruler of God and Man, it is the place where the scriptures of Buddhism were first committed in writings (Pali Canons, 29 BC), and throughout my childhood it was called Ceylon, the land of the world’s best tea.
Sri Lanka is a stunning country with some 5,000 years of documented history where the original soul of Buddhism still flourishes and nature’s beauty remains abundant and relatively unspoiled. This tour takes us on a journey to explore and connect to as much as we can.
Our journey will allow us to explore some amazing ancient places in Sri Lanka such as: King Bhuvanekabahu’s 13th century massive rock fortress with its stone ornamental stairway, the 11th century Royal Palace at Polonnaruwa, the 5th century Sigiriya rock fortress with the beautiful frescoes of the “Heavenly Maidens” and the rock caves at Aluvihara whose history can be traced back to the 3rd century BC.
Sri Lanka radiates Buddhism at every step of this journey and we will be connecting to it at its very depth. We can contemplate our world in the gardens of Anuradhapura where 2250 years ago a branch from the sacred Bodhi tree that Buddha sat under to attain enlightenment was planted. We will climb the stone steps to Ambastala Stupa on Mihintale Rock as pilgrims have done since 247 BC when this place was known as the cradle of Buddhism. We will visit the lesser-known monasteries of Thapowanaya and the monastic cave complex at Ritigala, as well as the ancient Buddhist temples of Buduruwagala and Wewrukannala. And even the temple at Dalda Maligawa which houses one of Buddha’s teeth that was taken from the flames of the funeral pyre and smuggled into Sri Lanka hidden in the hair of a princess.
Some of the places we visit will be special because of their history, some powerful because of the belief systems attached, some surrounded by the endless beauty of nature; one thing is for sure, our journey of Sri Lanka is a journey of our inner and outer worlds, a journey of time and space, a journey of mind and matter.
Join us on a adventure that is truly special.
