Both yoga and meditation unite the body and mind, inviting us to experience the present moment. This retreat will combine basic principles of Buddhism, related teachings from the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali—particularly shared ideas about ways to end our daily dissatisfaction—and the practice of yoga asanas. Students will experience through asana, mindfulness techniques, and meditation how these various approaches can work together to quiet the mind and allow the breath to move and expand to deepen our ability to tap into our inner wisdom.
Staying present to the body in asana hones our concentration, while the poses themselves build flexibility and endurance, which allows more freedom and ease in sitting meditation practice. Paying close attention to our experiences on and off the mat can bring self-knowledge and wisdom.
Each day will include periods of silent and guided meditation, and the practice of yoga postures and breath awareness. Evening group sessions will offer time to share and integrate insights. Retreatants are asked to maintain silence during all non-class time.
In mindfulness training and in yoga postures, we learn to be present—to show up in every moment of our lives, whether on the yoga mat, on the meditation cushion, or on the road of life. On retreat, we can experience first-hand the truism that how we are on the mat is how we are off the mat.
Southern Dharma Retreat Center provides “sticky” yoga mats. Participants are asked to bring a yoga strap and block. If possible, also bring three firm blankets.
No previous experience with meditation or yoga is required to benefit from this retreat.
