The five hindrances are powerful, archetypal, states of mind that negatively impact practice. They are desire, aversion, restlessness and worry, sloth and torpor, and skeptical doubt. When we view practice as the entirety of our lives we find that these hindrances can have serious effects throughout our entire lives. Hindrances on the cushion spill into our every day lives. Hindrances in our every day lives spill into our time on the cushion. The more we fuel hindrances, the more apt they are to take hold of the mind. But just as easily as we’re swept away by habitual reactivity to these states of mind, we can wake up and see the hindrances with mindfulness. Mindful, we’re in the present moment and a profound shift is available to us. A hindrance can become an object of awareness. We can harness the energy that might typically flow towards habit and distraction, and instead see clearly the nature of how things are.
Over seven weeks we’ll explore each of these five hindrances, how they manifest, and the impacts both internally and relationally. We’ll utilize the practice of Insight Dialogue to recognize how the hindrances take hold of the mind, and how we can invite release.
Participants will meet online in real-time via Zoom (web video conference) for 90 minutes on Tuesdays for seven consecutive weeks. Each session will include take-home practices for silent practice and our day-to-day lives.
