The Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Course (HTTC) takes place at the Hridaya Yoga Center in Mazunte, Oaxaca, Mexico.

The Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Course, the HTTC, is a systematic and comprehensive approach to meditation and Hatha Yoga.

The HTTC provides:

    Over 600 hours of accredited Meditation and Hatha Yoga teacher training (the HTTC is registered with US-based Yoga Alliance, following standards for their 500-hour level teacher training programs)

    All the Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Course content, totalling more than 900 pages, presented in 3 monthly booklets. Each month, HTTC attendees will receive a booklet containing the course papers for that month

    An Anatomy and Physiology booklet

    At the end of course, all graduates will receive an HTTC kit containing an additional booklet with advice and recommendations for Hridaya teachers, some inspiring books by Ramana Maharshi, audio files of the HTTC lectures, the PowerPoint presentations used during HTTC lectures, and other useful materials.

The training includes the following subjects:

A survey of the main meditation traditions throughout history – Theravada Buddhism, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen,  Christianity, Isihasm, Sufism, Hasidism, etc.

The ABCs of meditation: proper postures for meditation, mudras for meditation, favorable moments for meditation, the importance of stretching and relaxation for meditation, benefits of meditation, etc.

Pranayama for calming the mind: rhythmic breathing theory in pranayama, nadi shodhana for meditation, etc.

Extensive presentation and practical guidance in some forms of meditation: Atma-vichara (the Self-enquiry Method of Ramana Maharshi), mahamudra, and walking meditation according to Theravada Buddhism

Practical guidelines for meditators: how to overcome hindrances during meditation, advice for meditators according to their dominant dosha (one of three bodily humors that make up the constitution according to ayurvedic medicine), the phases of a meditation retreat, etc.

The stages of deep meditation (the 8 jhanas) according to the Buddhist tradition

The spiritual benefits of dark retreats – kaya kalpa, from the advaita vedanta perspective

A series of lectures on Advaita Vedanta; metaphors and stories in Vedanta

A description of Self-realization according to Shankaracharya 

The ineffable sat-chit-ananda

Extensive explanations of Ramana Maharshi’s teachings, including Self-enquiry (Atma-vichara), The Spiritual Heart, Bringing the I-feeling back into its source, Sphurana, etc.

Hridaya Yoga – metaphysical principles and basic concepts,  including Hridaya Hatha Yoga, the Spiritual Heart’s significance,  mastering the 4 fundamental attitudes of Hridaya meditation, surrender – a fundamental key on the path of Self-revelation, spanda, the “Sacred Tremor of the Heart” (a concept from Kashmir Shaivism used in Hridaya meditation), the gaps between thoughts, Open Concepts, Open Attention, etc.

Methods for developing awareness: capturing the uncaught mind, micro-practices, the technique of the ultra-slowing of physical and mental activities, etc.

Methods for awakening the Heart: Blowing upon the embers of the heart, Tonglen, etc.

Methods for developing creativity and intuition

The Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga Teacher Training Course also includes:

    Anatomy and physiology classes

    Hridaya teacher methodology: how to teach Hridaya concepts, how to teach Hridaya Hatha Yoga, etc.

    Practicum training – 3 practicum sessions for each HTTC attendee

    Hridaya Retreat training – participation in 2 10-Day Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreats led by Sahajananda.

    Individual evaluation and coaching from Sahajananda

    Group coaching from other experienced Hridaya teachers

    The experience of 36 hours of Dark Retreat (kaya kalpa), meditation in complete darkness

    A 3-day camping trip to stunning waterfalls located near Mazunte, including classes in nature, outdoor lectures, communal meals, evening bonfires, and more

Successful completion of this 500-hour course grants participants permission to teach Hridaya Meditation and Hatha Yoga anywhere, with support materials and guidance provided.

Enrollment

This course is open to 33 participants.

One month prior to the closing of enrollment, if spaces in the course remains open, hopeful participants on the waiting list will be notified that they may join the HTTC.

Schedule, Food, Accommodation

The HTTC will be held six days per week, Monday to Saturday, approximately 8.5 class hours per day.

Vegetarian food is served in our dining room daily for a reasonable price. The communal eating area is open for everyone to enjoy meals together.

Accommodation on-site and in the area ranges from 2000–10,000 Mexican pesos per month. Consult www.tomzap.com for Mazunte and San Augustinillo or email us for further suggestions.

Payment can be made in Euros either by direct bank transfer or via PayPal. Details are on the application form.

We would like to address a few points surrounding the HTTC application process:

    Sahajananda requires participation in at least one 10-Day Hridaya Silent Meditation Retreat, either internationally or in Mazunte, Mexico, prior to applying for this course.

    Applications may be submitted up to one month before the HTTC begins. Participants will be chosen by Sahajananda and informed if they are accepted into the course within three weeks after the receipt of the application and deposit.

    Waiting list applicants will be notified by in due time. However, approval to join one year’s waiting list does not confer any automatic acceptance to a future course should the participant not ultimately have the opportunity to enroll in the course desired. In such a case, the participant is welcome to reapply for a future course.
