ABOUT THE RETREAT

The secular mindfulness movement has resulted in a widespread awareness of the value of meditation. In addition, these benefits have been affirmed by science: reduced stress, improved concentration, and an overall sense of well-being. But there is more to the story. Not only does meditation provide tools to help us deal with life’s challenges, but it helps us cultivate a greater appreciation of our humanity and the world we occupy, and the subtlety of experience that’s possible. The practice of meditation is an ever-evolving process of going deeper as our practice matures and insight unfolds.

This year’s retreat will focus on the dynamics of meditation practice – what it is, what are its main varieties, how each of them functions and how each can serve as a means for understanding and transforming our minds. To do this, we will spend some time each day exploring one of a range of traditional meditation practices, examining how each has its own particular flavor and function. At the same time, we will maintain continuity and develop depth in our practice by focusing most of the day on our own traditional technique.

Our exploration will include the full spectrum of techniques that focus on cultivating:

    Focused attention on an object (mindfulness or shamatha);

    Open monitoring of whatever arises (awareness);

    Positive emotional states such as love as an antidote to anger and attachment (maitri);

    Transformation of ego clinging (tonglen-sending and receiving);

    Insight as a means for uprooting ignorance (vipashyana);

We will see how there is actually a continuum in these types of meditation with each one leading organically to the next, and that this progression is naturally incorporated into our tradition’s technique by combining factors from each of the other techniques.

The retreat will be led by John Baker, Jane Kolleeny and Derek Kolleeny, all of whom are experienced dharma teachers, authorized by Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche in the Kagyu-Nyingma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. As students of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, WBC directors Jane and Derek Kolleeny and John Baker emphasize experiential Buddhism, which develops as meditation practice deepens and filters into one’s daily life. Trungpa Rinpoche was a Tibetan meditation master, scholar, and teacher who interpreted Buddhism for Western lifestyles and minds and who brought the Shambhala Buddhist teachings on creating enlightened society to the West.
