Antonio Montero Pisco
- Iquitos, Peru
Antonio, a Peruvian Shaman began when he was seven years old; when many people used plants for healing, (it is roughly the 1940’s). Antonio and his family lived in Lamas, located north of Iquitos in the jungle. Both his parents were curanderos, llama keepers, and several other relatives were shamans.
He is respected in many places of the world for his integrity, knowledge and experience with medicinal plants. He has assisted prominent authors of published research and other texts regarding plants of the Amazon. He has led groups of researchers, pharmacists and ethnobotanists into the Amazon jungle sharing his extensive knowledge of herbal medicine and shamanism.
When asked his opinion on modern medicine practices as compared to traditional medicinal practices, Antonio said that medicine is undergoing a huge change worldwide, not just in Peru. They are loosing traditional knowledge all over the world and scientists have made much progress making all medicine with chemicals. Antonio believes that always taking medicine with lots of chemicals continues the ailment a person is experiencing and eventually stops working instead of helping. Antonio knows it is important that we do not loose this knowledge and we keep it and know about the plants. However, Antonio approves of herbal pills and western medicine in extreme situations. Antonio wants to teach the knowledge he has gained to keep it going. He does this by traveling to different communities and teaching his children as well as students.
