Indira Kate Kalmbach

Since graduating from her first yoga teacher training in 2004, Indira’s teaching has evolved from the fast-paced vinyasa she enjoyed practicing and teaching in her early twenties to a crisp alignment-based approach inspired by the Iyengar Method. Indira has been practicing yoga since childhood: her mother was a yoga student in the 1960s and transmitted her love of the practice to Indira at an early age.

Indira's degree in Philosophy and English Literature may help with Yoga Philosophy and writing (in addition to writing student training manuals, Indira has published work in Origin and Mantra magazine), but it is Indira's specialty yoga training that continues to inspire and influence her teaching. Indira has taken programs and trainings including Yoga for Scoliosis with Elise Browning Miller, Restorative Yoga Therapeutics with Jillian Pransky, Bandha Yoga Anatomy with Ray Long MD, Yoga for Children, Metta Meditation with Stephen Cope, and Sanskrit Studies for Yogis with Dr. Katy Poole. Indira is also immensely grateful for formative time spent at Tekishinjuku Kyoto Kokusai Zendo in rural Japan, her time spent with Ram Dass and Roshi Joan Halifax, early training in vinyasa and Cakra-Yoga sequencing with Shiva Rea, and learning the art of story-telling from Erich Schiffmann.

After completing her advanced yoga certification (E-RYT 500) at the Nosara Yoga Institute, Indira accepted a position on faculty there and co-taught the 200-hour yoga teacher trainings in Costa Rica and Canada until 2011. Indira has also taught at Omega Institute in New York and with Ray Long, MD at Blue Spirit in Costa Rica.

Indira understands yoga as a physical, mental, and emotional discipline with the potential to transform human being-ness. Her yoga teaching embodies an ecological sense of the world-community which includes all of Nature, exiling nothing. Indira’s intention is to lead classes that inspire creative, mindful presence with respect for real experience (no matter how challenging) which leads radical self-acceptance, nonviolence and peace on Earth. In addition to leading yoga teacher training programs, Indira teaches private sessions for teenagers and adults with scoliosis, yoga for young professional surfers, and public yoga classes for students of all levels and from all traditions.

Free Retreat Givewaway

We love you. And because we do, we're giving away another free retreat.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

My last retreat at SMC was so inspiring and so relaxing. But i'd love to have more time there to spend at the Stupa, visit the Kami shrine, and generally interact with the beautiful enlightened society happening on that entire land. Brett

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
