(See also: meditation and Buddhism.) Zen is a unique form of Buddhism that developed as the Buddhist teachings spread East through China and Japan, interacting with Taoist teachings along the way. The emphasis on simplicity in East Asian cultures create the perfect vessel for these teachings on ‘emptiness.’ Zen has a strong emphasis on meditation practice as the means to realize emptiness as a lived experience. It is this experience that enlivens the brush of the inspired calligrapher, or prompts the rogue monk to burst into spontaneous song. Whether through koans, long hours of zazen, tea ceremony, martials arts, or any of the other practices associated with Zen, you will find delicate yet forceful means to wake up to the present moment.

Why Retreat?

I go on retreat to remember who I really am. And I remember that I am alive, Deryk
