La Pélisserie

About us

The House and Town

La Pélisserie is a very old and atmospheric medieval merchant's house in the heart of the medieval French town of Saint Antonin Noble Val, situated in the deep South-West of France and steeped in the histories of the Cathars, Templars, Troubadours and pilgrim routes of the Chemin de Compostela.  Denise and Clinton Hadgill have been running the house as a chambres d'hôtes between May and September in a way similar to a boutique hotel since 2013, when the house hosted the Director and main actors, including Dame Helen Mirren, during the filming of the Hundred Foot Journey.  The house is a warm and embracing place and a very calm haven to rest, relax and renew.

Saint Antonin Noble Val has a distinguished and special history, touching on the crusades, catharism, the inquisition, the albigensian crusade, the wars of religion and the hundred years' war amongst many other influences.  It is central to the story of Thomas Merton, a trapist monk, who was greatly inspired by the town.  Above all Saint Antonin retains a mystique and vibration that is very special and tangible as one wonders around its ancient medieval streets and houses. It magically sits at the confluence of 2 rivers, the Bonette and the Aveyron and is towered over by the majestic Aveyron gorge.

General Facilities

Our communal spaces include a private re-landscaped walled courtyard garden under the shade of a precious magnolia tree, 2 large cellar rooms to escape from the hot summer days, a snooker/ pool-table room, a table-tennis room, a gym room and 2 large salons respectively 45m2 and 120m2, which can be arranged to suit the needs of any group seeking to use the house.

All individuals and group members are provided with bed and breakfast and the occasional dinner, lunch or reception as required and booked in advance.  We concentrate on classic French and mediterranean cuisine.

Calming music plays in the downstairs salon at most times and all bedrooms have a mix of antique French and English books.  The downstairs salon and snooker room offer a library full of books generally concentrating on philosophy, meditation, art, religions, alchemy, mindfulness, history, mysteries, myths and legends.  Guests are free to select and read all the books available.  We also like to light candles in various parts of the house to add to the welcoming and also contemplative atmospehere of the house.  Guests are also free to watch a large selection of films on request.  For times when group activities have stopped we offer guests an enormous selection of games, puzzles and cards.

Future and Past Guests/ Groups

Our clientele is truly international.  We have welcomed guests from amongst other countries: India, Germany, Belgium, USA, Ireland, France, UK, Holland, Thailand, Argentina, Hing-Kong, South Africa, Mexico, Australia, Spain and Denmark.

In recent years we have hosted receptions, banquet dinners and birthday parties.  We are looking forward to welcoming a wedding party from the UK, an international photography course group, a mindfulness group from California and groups from both the USA and Australia concentrating on various interests including: French markets, antiques and cookery courses for 2018.  In between groups, we are also open as a chambres d'hôtes de charme or small family hotel.

Accommodation

We offer exclusive use and privacy of the house to groups of sufficient size.  The accommodation comprises 5 large ensuite double bedrooms ranging between 23m2 and 28m2, one of which can be used as a self-contained self-catering apartment/suite with its own separate second salon or double- bedroom. We can also provide an extra single bed in 2 of the rooms.  In summary, the "Hibiscus" apartment can accommodate 4.  "Lavender" can accommodate 3.  "Jasmin", "Rose" and "Magnolia" each can accommodate 2 with an extra single bed available for "Rose".  This would indicate a maximum capacity of 14.

Free Retreat Givewaway

We love you. And because we do, we're giving away another free retreat.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Reconnecting with myself after a very crazy few months with a new baby! Just having that feeling of being grounded again. But also having an opportunity to connect with new amazing people. Getting exposed and Inspired by new (to me) yoga instructors (and community). Being in the presence of real, authentic and raw emotion (the whole spectrum).. So many reasons! Alyson
