Brunswick Portland Shambhala Center

About us

Whether you are completely new to meditation and want to learn the basics or an advanced practitioner looking to deepen your practice, a personal meditation instructor is the ideal (perhaps only) way to accomplish this.  We offer free individual meditation instruction.

Shambhala is a global community of people inspired by the principle that every human being has a fundamental nature of basic goodness. This nature, our innate wisdom, can be developed so that it benefits our own lives and helps meet the many challenges facing the world.

Community Group1

Shambhala welcomes people from all walks of life, faiths, and backgrounds. They come together to practice meditation, gather, and celebrate in order to develop a global culture that cultivates dignity and sanity in an increasingly chaotic and stressful world.

Each individual, each group, and each Shambhala Centre around the world is linked together by the Shambhala teachings and lineage, making a worldwide community of shared inspiration. You can see this spirit of global collaboration in the short multilingual film, Countless Points of Light, narrated in English, Chinese, French and Spanish.

There are thousands of members and friends of Shambhala on all continents. We have online communities and more than 200 Shambhala centres and groups, as well as individual members, located in major cities, towns, and in rural settings in over 50 different countries.

In addition to meditation, study and contemplative practices, Shambhala centres and groups offer teachings in the arts and offer a range of cultural and social activities that cultivate wakefulness and creativity.

Many people enjoy visiting local Shambhala Centres and groups when they travel. Two qualities stand out: that the heart of Shambhala is universal, and is expressed in diverse ways through local cultures.

Free Retreat Givewaway

We love you. And because we do, we're giving away another free retreat.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

This sounds like a dream! I am an education student and I have spent way too much time working all summer to pay for school. My boyfriend of 5 years is a government firefighter and has been away working most of the summer. His 30th Birthday and our 6th anniversary is coming up this winter, we would love to celebrate with a yoga retreat! We both love yoga but have barley had time to practice in the past few months. Keeping our fingers crossed! Jaimee and Dan

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
