About This Center

River Mountain is a youth wellness retreat designed to get kids off of screens and into the outdoors. Through outdoor adventure and experiential learning, River Mountain empowers young people to be more mindful about time spent on technology and the benefits of time spent in the natural world.

Our retreat is located next to Buchanan State Forest in the heart of the Allegheny Mountains of southern Pennsylvania. Our campus stretches across Black Valley at the base of Tussey Mountain, along the banks of Sweet Root Creek.

Our valley is breathtakingly beautiful, and the activities in the mountains that surround us are endless.

There exists within everyone a grand passion, an outlandish thirst for adventure, a desire to live boldly and vividly through the journey of life. -Kurt Hahn

Venue Highlights

Two of our favorite aspects of River Mountain are our 1860's Mennonite-constructed barn and our 1807 renovated old log home.

The barn includes a climbing wall, ping pong tables, a basketball hoop, and other indoor activities.

The log home serves as our dining hall. Meals are served family style and oriented around conversation, laughter, and engaging with one another.

Accommodations

Our retreat cabins were designed in harmony with circadian rhythms. Our young guests wake with the sun as it rises over Warrior Ridge, and fall asleep gazing at the night sky and listening to the sounds of Sweet Root Creek.

Each cabin includes two full bathrooms.

Accommodations include organic cotton sheets and blankets, down comforter, organic towels, and natural eco-friendly bath products. Fresh linens, laundry, and cleaning services are provided by our staff.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Recenter, Rebalance, Renew..... I cannot provide nurture and wisdom to the people I love without the opportunity to fill up my own cup. Diane

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
