What's Included
1. Preparation and Purification
• Cleansing Baths: Participants often undergo ritual baths using special forest herbs, water, or river purification rites to cleanse the body and spirit before entering the sacred space.
• Body and Face Painting: Initiates and community members apply white kaolin powder (symbolizing the spirit world, ancestors, and apprenticeship) or red clay pigment to their faces and bodies.
• Sacred Attire: Dancers and leaders wear traditional clothing, raffia skirts, animal skins, feathers, or shells, sometimes incorporating red, white, and black colors.
2. Arrival and Gathering in the Ebandza (Temple)
• Entering the Space: Participants gather at sunset inside a traditional temple or designated community structure (ebandza). Shoes are typically removed upon entry.
• Sacred Fire: A central bonfire or torch using resin (such as Okoumé tree sap) is lit, serving as a focal point for light, warmth, and a portal to the unseen world.
3. Music, Chanting, and All-Night Vigil
• Traditional Instruments: The ritual is driven by polyrhythmic drumming, the Ngombi (sacred harps), the Mougongo (mouth bows), rattles, and bamboo tubes (Bizumba).
• Continuous Dancing and Chanting: The congregation sings and dances around the fire from sunset until sunrise. The repetition of hypnotic rhythms and lack of sleep help induce a collective trance state.
4. Consumption of Iboga Root
• Ingestion: Under the guidance of a spiritual leader or shaman (N'ganga), participants consume the scraped root bark or preparations of the Tabernanthe iboga plant.
• The Visionary Journey: The medicine triggers an intense, long-lasting introspective and visionary phase (lasting many hours), during which initiates encounter ancestral wisdom, confront personal truths, or seek physical and emotional healing.
• Purging: Physical cleansing or purging (vomiting) is common as part of the body's detoxification and energetic release.
5. Morning Integration and Counsel
• Dawn Reemergence: As daylight breaks, the musical tempo shifts and the night vigil concludes.
• Interpretation and Guidance: Elders and the N'ganga help initiates process their visions, offering moral counsel, life lessons, and integration support to anchor the spiritual experience into daily community life.
