Chandrashila

Chandrashila is located at the summit of Tungnath. It literally means "moon rock", and is located at a height of about 4,000 meters above sea level.

Location

This retreat will take place in Rishikesh, Chopta, Tungnath, and Chandrashila, across Uttarakhand, India.

Rishikesh

Rishikesh is a city in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand, in the Himalayan foothills beside the Ganges river. The river is considered holy, and the city is renowned as a center for studying yoga and meditation. Temples and ashrams line the eastern bank around Swarg Ashram, a traffic-free, alcohol-free, and vegetarian enclave, upstream from the Rishikesh town.

Chopta

Chopta is a small region of meadows and evergreen forest area which is a part of Kedarnath wildlife sanctuary, and a base for trekking to Tungnath, the third temple of Panch Kedar, which lies 3.5 kilometers away.

Tungnath

Tungnath is one of the PanchKedars and is the highest Shiva temple in the world. As per the legend, sage Vyas Rishi advised the Pandavas (Refer: Mahabharata) that since they were culpable of slaying their own relativesduring the Mahabharata war, their act could be pardoned only by Lord Shiva. They went in search of Shiva who hid to avoid them as he was convinced of their guilt. To keep away from them, Shiva took the form of a bull and went into hiding in Guptakashi, where Pandavas chased him. Later, Shiva’s body in the form of bull’s body parts re-materialized at five different locations that represent the "PanchKedar", where Pandavas built temples of Lord Shiva at each location, to worship and venerate, seeking his pardon and blessings. Each one is identified with a part of his body; Tungnath is identified as the place where the bahu (hands) were seen. (Third temple of PanchKedar and the highest Shiva temple in the World). During the winters, the idols from Kedarnath temple, and Madhyamaheshwar are brought tou and worshiped, there, for six months.

Chandrashilais summit of the Tungnathand literally means "Moon Rock". There are various legends associated with this place. According to one of the most popular legends, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that moon-god Chandra spent time here in penance. The Beauty of Chandrashila is incredible. It is an impressive vantage point that offers 360 degrees panoramic views of the mighty Himalayas. This is a beautiful trek, with difficulty level, rated as easy to moderate
