Beckley Retreats
The Beckley Retreats are thorough and well structured as both a clinical therapeutic experience and an engagement - during the two ceremonies in which psilocybin is ingested - in shamanistic/indigenous-peoples' rituals. This "hybrid approach" makes Beckley Retreats an ideal opportunity for participants who are engaging in clinical therapy - or who have engaged in it, in the past.
However, those participants who are unfamiliar with therapy, may struggle to understand the importance of absorbing the information provided, doing the exercises suggested and repeatedly practicing the skills that are clearly and simply demonstrated.
It may appear to those participants as "feeding from a firehose" of information, exercises and suggestions.
Those who experienced significant and acute distress during the ceremony are given resources by Beckley to process their experience.
Most of the participants experienced acute distress on the retreat I attended. I would therefore recommend that all participants to Beckley Retreats engage in clinical therapy - both before and after the retreat - and discuss their therapeutic objectives, the therapeutic process and it's outcomes openly with the Beckley facilitators.
This is more likely to reduce risk that acute and significant distress arising from the ceremonies, becomes chronic and that past traumas and existential suffering and begin to trigger maladaptive coping behaviours.
All the participants on the Retreat I attended gained insights into reactive, regressive and recursive behavioural, thought and emotional patterns and gave them an opportunity and some cognitive and emotional "space" to observe and change them.
