Nature Bathing in Naramata (Carol Engstrom)

Ages 7+
Monday-Friday, 9:15-11:45 a.m.
$255 + $25 materials fee

Using the principles from Richard Louv’s book Last Child in the Woods, children and adults will design forts, explore the beaches, walk in the pine forest and dip nets in the lake and the creek. Natural spaces and materials stimulate children’s imaginations and foster inventiveness and creativity. Discover the flying beauties, butterflies, bees and moths. Use all your sense to listen, feel and connect with nature.

Birds in the Morning, Bats in the Evening (Carol Engstrom & Frank Fraser)

Ages 10+
Monday-Friday, 7:00-8:30 a.m.
Wednesday & Friday, 8:30-10:00 p.m.
$225 + $25 materials fee

Are you an early riser? Birds tend to be early risers! Find out why. You will use new powers of observation and listening skills to see and find birds. You will be amazed at the variety of birds found at the Naramata Centre and will learn about other birds found in the Okanagan and their habitats. Over the 5 days you will practice slowing down and looking until you see. Through guided walks you will experience the healing properties of nature. You will learn birding basics, the equipment needed, field guides, techniques for finding birds, how to identify and use field marks, and observe the different ways they fly. Bring binoculars, camera and a bird book if you have them.

In addition to our morning explorations of birds, this program includes an evening exploration of bats. Some species of these mammals are considered sacred in India. We will learn about the diversity of bats in the Okanagan and see and hear them foraging and marvel at their flying abilities. Listen for owls and observe the animals that come out at dusk. Interested in bats but not birds (or just not an early morning person)? Drop into either “bats on the beach” evening session for $15/session (to be paid for once on site).

Beginning Watercolour: An Expression of the Inner Journey (Valda Harris)

Ages 10+
Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m. – noon. (with informal studio time from noon – 3:00 p.m.)
$250 + $50 materials fee

This class is designed for those who are new or fairly new to the medium of watercolour. Using meditation to develop our powers of inner and outer observation, we will be inspired by the natural beauty surrounding us at Naramata. There will be lots of time to play, and participants will focus on process over product.  Let’s see what happens when we pay attention and then let go! Guided, whole group classes will take place from 9:00 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday.  From noon until 3:00 p.m., our classroom will become a voluntary studio space for work on self-selected projects and/or step-by-step instruction of specific compositions as we learn to paint landscapes using photos. I will also be bringing some silk painting supplies for those who wish to apply what we are learning to silk. A beginner kit and paper to take with you at the end of the class will be provided in the materials fee.  Feel free to bring your own supplies as well.

Recorder Revival: Learn the Recorder and Explore the Ages (Misty Rose)

Ages 12+
Monday-Friday, 4:30-5:30 p.m.
$50 + $10 materials fee

Did you know that Bach, Purcell, Telemann and Vivaldi all wrote music for the recorder? Playing the recorder may take you back to memories from grade school, but their history reaches all the way back to medieval times. Come learn to play recorder for the first time or brush up on some old skills. We will focus on the basics of playing, breathing, and reading simple music, all while enjoying recorder choir pieces together.  Bring any recorders you may have (alto, soprano, etc.), but if you don’t have one, don’t worry! Join the circle, as we explore and play with the magical sounds of the recorder.

Feel Better Than Ever (Brent Kisilevich)

Monday-Friday, 9:30 a.m. – noon.
$270 program fee + $30 materials fee

In this wonderfully revitalizing workshop you will begin moving in ways that will forever change how you think about and learn with your body. Through gentle movements and attention, participants access their inner potential to create physical well-being and eliminate unnecessary strain and effort from their lives. Using principles for learning and moving first introduced by the late physicist Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais, you will immediately find yourself on a rejuvenating path of “living better than ever.” Come discover for yourself the exhilarating possibilities that arise from moving in more discerning and novel ways than you may have ever imagined before. Appropriate for adults of all ages and ability.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:
