About us

So, what exactly is Ruckus Retreat?

Well, in one sentence, it's an interdisciplinary creative retreat hosted at Buckland Hall in Wales from Thursday 30th August- Sunday 2nd September 2018. Bit of a mouthful, we know!

The idea for Ruckus was born from conversations with other creatives wanting an event that was community-driven, interactive, and non-hierarchical. Ruckus isn't about sitting silently in front of panels taking notes in a row- it's about creating, sharing, learning from each other, and making noise.  You will choose your own programme of workshops and creative time to get the most out of your experience... Workshop leaders include Art Lecturer Soof Andry, award-winning screenwriter Sammy Paul, and renown poet Bridget Minamore, as well as professionals from the publishing industry and other creative fields including photography and directing.

Are you a:

  • writer
  • artist
  • performer
  • poet
  • photographer
  • director?

Then Ruckus might be for you...

Ruckus has four key elements:

  • Creative Workshops (interactive sessions where you will be creating, discussing, and experimenting)
  • Professional Workshops (interactive sessions focused on the professional and business life of young creatives)
  • Feedback Groups (hand-picked small groups you'll meet with each day to work through creative problems and share you work with)
  • The Open Mic & Gallery Show (a chance to show your work and see what everyone else has been doing)

Oh, and Buckland Hall is a 4- star country mansion set in the stunning scenery of the Brecon Beacons with over 60 acres of gardens.  Not too shabby!

Venue Highlights

Buckland Hall is a 4* manor house in the heart of the Welsh countryside - the retreat will take up the whole manor and its 60 acres of gardens and ground. From the days of Arthur, through a medieval prince of Wales to Lord Buckland, the site has been home for generations of families and hobbits (Buckland Hall was reportedly the inspiration for J R R Tokien in choosing the childhood home for Frodo Baggins, when the author was in the area!). Now its doors welcome you to experience the comfort and therapeutic qualities of this idyllic country mansion.
