About us

Hawaii Island Retreat Center is nestled in 50 acres of gardens, wild groves and ancient valley trails on the beautiful Kohala Coast of the island of Hawaii. On the grounds are legendary council stones and native trees planted by a Hawaiian Kahuna and his beloved wife. Experience the sublime beauty of Hapuna Beach or the majesty of Mount Kilauea (Hawaii Volcanoes National Park). If the lava is flowing, we may arrange for a local tour company to take a group on a Lava Hike to witness the birth of new earth. This is an additional cost and is optional.

Organic vegetable gardens and fruit orchards on the grounds provide much of what is used by on site chefs to prepare your meals included in the retreat package. You will be well nourished by sustainably and locally produced plant foods. Enjoy three meals a day as part of your healing process. Non-vegetarian, vegetarian, and vegan options are available. Please specify your preference at time of booking. Sack lunches are available on excursion days and/or you may sample local island foods while we are out.

Experience the transformative infuence of being in “Ahu Pohaku Ho'omluhia”, the “Place of Healing Stones” as you practice yoga arts of meditation, pranayama, asana, and prana danda yoga with your retreat leader, Amy Valdez, 500 E-YRT and teacher of 10 years in California. The over abundance of Prana, life force, of the surroundings can enhance all yoga practices to bring you to your natural state of health and well being. Amy is committed to supporting you where you are and to deepen your practice. Connect to your practice, your true self and the healing place that is Hawaii Island Retreat. Enjoy live music during savasana and circle time.

This place is utopic. Amazing rooms/vibe/energy/hospitality. Being in this natural paradise lifted my spirits and sparked my creativity. The food is all fresh and from the land; delicious. The best part is the family that runs this place they are so kind and giving; made me feel right at home! My only complaint is that I wanted more time here.

Hawaii Island Retreat’s organic gardens and orchards are a living tribute to the Big Island's bounty of exotic vegetables and fruits. We grow the foods used in our hotel kitchen, from salad greens to lychee and sunrise papaya.

It is elegant green travel at it's best. Our garden-side dining room opens onto fragrant plantings. Here you will enjoy organic farm-to-table cuisine. You will find our Hawaiian spa cuisine menu rich with local accents, whole-grain breads, Pacific Rim dishes, and international menus.

Our chefs are brilliant in the kitchen. When they are not out gathering herbs for an appetizer dish, they are about the region sampling local dishes for new menu ideas. Join them for a spa cooking class or afternoon in the gardens.

"Everything is fresh and beautifully prepared. Thank you for these healthy, delightful meals."

Our eco-boutique hotel offers a choice of elegant bungalows, suites and yurts. The suites are color matched and named for the large, antique Saxon prints of tropical flowers. Each suite has a spacious bathroom with a large soaking tub and separate shower. These spacious suites are 375 - 450 square feet and decorated with turn-of -the-century-Hawaii furniture.
All suites have private balconies and chairs, overlooking the fragrant garden as well as ocean. The yurt bungalows have valley or garden views.

Yurt Village guests have easy access to the spa's massage bunglalows, movement room, jacuzzi, and infinity pool. Meals are served in the main hotel, where guests can also enjoy our fragrant gardens, open-air living room, theater room, and library.
The yurts have two single beds or one king, a private toilet and sink. The spa locker rooms as well as indoor and outdoor shower options are located nearby.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

To drop deep into the practices and connect with my true nature. Rubin
