The Sadhana of Kindness: Awakening the Moon of Enlightened Society

About us

The Sadhana of Kindness weekend retreat is a pilot program jointly hosted by the Pioneer Valley Shambhala Center and the Windhorse Hill Retreat Center. The program is devoted to practicing and studying the Sadhana of Kindness composed by Sakyong Mipham as a companion practice to the Shambhala Sadhana: Discovering the Sun of Basic Goodness. A sadhana, literally “means of accomplishment,” is a liturgical practice that presents a guided meditation to accomplish a specific purpose - in this case, the cultivation of kindness. In the Buddhist and Shambhala traditions kindness is understood as the innate longing for connection that enables us to put others before ourselves. Engaging in kindness—ordinary kindness—connects us directly with others. Through kindness life becomes a mutual celebration of our shared humanity.
The program will include the reading transmission, or Lung, which gives permission to practice the Sadhana of Kindness. In addition to practicing the sadhana, we will also engage in sitting meditation, Shambhala Meditation, various movement exercises, study, dialogic pairs, discussion groups, and contemplative outdoor walks. During the retreat we will observe silence, which facilitates tuning into one’s sense perceptions.
The weekend retreat starts with a public talk on Friday evening. By registering for the retreat you will automatically be registered for the Friday evening talk, The Sadhana of Kindness.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

I teach yoga part time and am a mom of two toddlers full time. I love my life, but goodness do I need a break. My husband and I have been putting off our wedding ceremony for 4 years because life has gotten in the way. We haven't had a single night alone since our family has grown. I wouldn't change a thing about our lives now, but it would be so wonderful to remember what it's like to 'just be us.' Antrim

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
