About us

Norma Roberts has crafted this retreat to be a time for discovering, exploring and enjoying the Celtic, Benedictine, and Franciscan traditions through the lens of Benedict, Patrick, Pelagius, Francis, and Clare. Participants will have the opportunity to become acquainted with these ancient traditions through reflections and the places where they intersect as well as where they depart from one another. Each of the traditions has contemporary counterparts who are leading people into the 21st century including J. Philip Newell (Celtic), Joan Chittister (Benedictine), and Richard Rohr (Franciscan).

From guest M. Frost October 2017 "I've had the privilege of coming to the Chiara Center for several different events. I keep coming back because of the beauty of the campus, the quiet and reflective atmosphere, and the splendor of the church. In my recent visit, I took my tech staff of 10 for a staff retreat. The staff was super accommodating, the location is perfect, the meeting locations were outstanding, the rooms were clean and restful, the grounds were perfect to spread out and walk/think/reflect/pray, and the church was a perfect setting for spiritual renewal. No matter if you are looking for a personal retreat or a location for a group/team, the Chiara Center needs to be on your list."

Event Highlights

  • Flowing from the convergence of these great traditions will come opportunities for activities throughout the weekend that are grounded in worship and scripture. Activities include group sharing, visual presentations, Lectio Divina, journaling and some artistic exercises.

Venue Highlights

Chiara Center is one of the healing ministries of the Hospital Sisters of St. Francis. All who are part of the Chiara Center ministry are committed to the spirit of St. Clare of Assisi who most clearly understood and embraced the gospel vision of St. Francis and cast a transparent healing light throughout the world. Menu/Cuisine

Our fare hovers between "comfort food" and healthy eating. We don't pretend to be on the cutting edge of highly healthy eating but our kitchen staff does well with the challenge of special diet request.

Accommodations

Built in 2006, the Chiara Center is a modern facilities with many different spaces to sit quietly or to gather with others. Our 30 guest rooms each contain two full-sized beds and face the blessed woods that silently abide with us. Whether walking the labyrinth, building your own "cairns" or meandering through the woods, these are imaginative spaces for a retreat.

Directions

For those flying in, we generally encourage people to fly from St. Louis Lambert International although some guests have flown into Peoria or Bloomington airports. We're an hour and forty minutes from St. Louis and two hours and 40 minutes from Chicago. When using GPS, be sure to make sure it reads out "Chiara Center."

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Reconnecting with myself after a very crazy few months with a new baby! Just having that feeling of being grounded again. But also having an opportunity to connect with new amazing people. Getting exposed and Inspired by new (to me) yoga instructors (and community). Being in the presence of real, authentic and raw emotion (the whole spectrum).. So many reasons! Alyson
