8 Day Ayahuasca Retreat at Tambo Ilusion

About us

The 8 day "Retreat with master plants" is a shamanic retreat using traditional Amazonian methods. It is a journey of self-exploration, healing and discovery that brings greater self-awareness.

Shamanic tourism is important in Peru. Several anthropologists say that this trend has to do with the beginning of a "new consciousness". Carlos Martinez Sarasola, anthropologist, explains: "There came a time when the West was interested in Eastern wisdom. Currently, the gaze is also turned to America, the indigenous culture and its vision of the spiritual world".

The retreat includes 3 ayahuasca ceremonies.

A minimum of 4 participants are required to run this retreat.

This retreat will be hosted by Lucho Romero who is of the Shipibo tradition. He is in his early 60's and feels like a teenager! He comes from a lineage of shamans and is well respected.  All of our guests who have worked with him love him.  Lucho himself is full of love and wisdom and this transpires in his ceremonies.

Ayahuasca is also referred to as a purge (inducing vomiting for many) that cleans, frees and heals the body, heart and mind. It is a concoction that shamans prepare from a vine that grows in the jungle called Ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis Caapi) which is mixed with the leaf of the Chacruna plant (Psychotria Viridis). The concoction is 100% natural.

Ayahuasca is known as the mother plant of the jungle. It has a strong and powerful energy. Each ceremony is a unique experience. The visualization process has the effect of allowing a person to heal spiritually, psychologically, emotionally and physically.

In Peru, ayahuasca is considered traditional medicine and part of the cultural heritage of the nation. This ancestral preparation of ayahuasca contains a powerful psychoactive and visionary substance called Dimethyltryptamine (DMT). While synthetic DMT is a controlled substance in many countries, ayahuasca contains no synthetic DMT and does not consist only of DMT. DMT is present in all living beings, including humans. It is a natural substance secreted by the brain when we dream or when in deep states of meditation. During ayahuasca ceremonies, the pineal gland associated with the third eye and intuition is activated.

The ritual of the ceremonies is very important, hence the importance of finding an experienced shaman and being in a safe place. This is serious work to be done in the jungle listening to the hymns ("icaros") of the shaman.

Working with ayahuasca is not a substitute for medical, psychiatric or psychotherapeutic treatment, but can complement a therapuetic process and facilitate personal development. If you are currently receiving treatment of any kind and are not sure about whether to participate in a session, please check with your doctor or therapist first.

At Tambo Ilusión, it is possible to go on a unique shamanic journey with ayahuasca and other master plants of the jungle in a beautiful, safe and comfortable setting.

My deepest thanks to you, Armando and Johanne for sharing so generously your magical piece of paradise. It was so nice to finally arrive here after searching, waiting and planning... and missing my plane! It is here at Tambo Ilusión that another chapter in my life has come to an end. The cold winter has finally succumb to the warmth of spring. During my time here, I abandonned the pleasure of salt, sugar ... , the comfort of touch, and the influence of modern civilization. I watched the banana trees grow and the ants build their empire. I journeyed accross the bridge to the world of Spirit. There I basked in the warm light of Love and surrenedered. To surrender to love is to be complete, to know peace, and to return to the Oneness. The search for love wears many disguises which can distract us, lead us astray. We must not forget to return to the Oneness. Surrender. My deepest respect and thanks to shamans Miguel and Mao for all their hard work. Everyone here at Tambo Ilusión has been such a pleasure to be around. Mucho Gusto! Wes, Canada

Venue Highlights

Tambo Ilusión is a beautiful nature reserve of 14 hectares (34.6 acres). There is an ecosystem that has formed around the natural spring that Armando, its owner has been protecting for nearly 35 years. Here the wildlife is safe to roam. More than 100 species of birds have been identified, there are over 500 species of trees, there are frogs, butterflies, monkeys, etc.

Tambo Ilusión offers a safe and comfortable environment for people as well! It's a wonderful place to do a retreat with master plants.
The 'Maloca', the space where the ceremonies are held is spectacular. It has hard wood floors and it is screened in for your comfort. The soundscape (the natural chorus of wind, birds, monkeys, insects, chickens) will transport you to a place of natural serenity deep within yourself.
The natural spring that we refer to as 'la laguna' is the jewel of the property. It is pure bliss to relax on the dock and observe the wildlife listening to the sound of the water running in the creek that is formed by the natural spring. Ideal place for processing, doing some soul searching, etc. Plus, it is just a joy to swim in this natural spring.
The plant baths are taken in a space created especially for this purpose in the creek.
