Event Site Description:

Samye Ling is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery and centre for world peace and health. It is an international training centre in Buddhist philosophy and meditation and is also a centre for the preservation of Tibetan religion, culture, medicine, art, architecture and handicrafts. Founded in 1967 by two spiritual masters, Samye Ling was the first Tibetan Buddhist Centre to be established in the West.

Samye Ling is home to a residential community of over 60 people, made up of both monastic and lay volunteers. It is not a requirement to be a Buddhist to live there, but residents are expected to live according to the Five Golden Rules. Which are:

To protect life and refrain from killing.

To respect other’s property and refrain from stealing.

To speak the truth and refrain from lying.

To embrace health and refrain from intoxicants.

To respect others and refrain from harmful sexual activity.

Purelands Retreat Centre is a 10 minute walk from the monastery and provides comfort and simplicity – the perfect conditions for personal or spiritual development. Its gentle uplifting energy has been enriched by the visits of H.H. the Dalai Lama and many more of the greatest Buddhist teachers of our time. There are comfortable single bedrooms and the meditation room provides an inspiring space for the course.

The monastery provide 3 vegetarian meals a day and ensure that there is more than enough tea to keep everyone refreshed in between sessions. There are beautiful forest tracks and paths to explore and WiFi is available at the monastery a short walk

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Watching the sun come over the mountain in the morning inspires me! Holly
