Nine Day Retreat with Jill Shepherd: Strengthening the two wings of Awakening: Wisdom and Compassion

About us

Strengthening the two wings of Awakening: Wisdom and Compassion

This nine-day retreat will provide an opportunity to strengthen both the wisdom and the compassion wings of awakening.  We will explore a variety of different practices taken from the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, alongside the four brahmavihara heart practices of kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

Each day, there will be sessions of guided and silent sitting meditation, walking meditation, group discussion, individual meetings with the teacher and a period of optional, gentle mindful movement.

There will be a period of relational meditation on the first two and last two days, while the middle days will be in full silence.  Relational or interpersonal meditation involves working in dyads (pairs) to practice mindful speaking and listening.

This retreat is best suited to people who have done at least one previous insight meditation weekend retreat.

The Centre is located in a tranquil setting in the small town of Medlow Bath in the City of Blue Mountains, two hours by train from Sydney and adjoining the vast World Heritage Area. The town has an altitude of over 1000 metres and enjoys a bracing mountain climate year round.

Menu/Cuisine

All food is vegetarian. Meals are served buffet style and the vast majority of dishes are gluten free. Meals are usually cooked by volunteers or donated, so we are not able to cater to specific dietary requests. However, a simple meal of rice, steamed vegetables and tofu can be prepared for people on restricted diets. There is a visitor’s fridge to store supplementary food items but there is no access to cooking facilities.

Accommodations

Accommodation is in single rooms with shared bathroom facilities, and central heating. Women and men stay in separate areas. Mattresses and pillows are provided, but you will need to bring your own bedding. Sitting mats, cushions, benches and chairs are provided in the meditation hall, which is centrally heated. The Centre is located on a sloping site and unfortunately is not currently suitable for wheelchair disabled or the frail aged. If you would like information about transgender and intersex accommodation please contact our office.

Directions

Medlow Bath is situated in the Blue Mountains one station west of Katoomba, about two hours by train from Sydney Central. The Centre is about 10 minutes walk from Medlow Bath station.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

After participating in more yoga classes and events this year than in my entire life, I am yearning for the opportunity to attend a professional retreat. The opportunity to grow my practice, learn from talented students and teachers, and immerse myself in this gorgeous Red Feather Lakes sanctuary is the dream of a lifetime! Sara
