About us

At just this moment what is it that appears in front of you?

Dogen, from Body-and-Mind Study of the Way

What are we facing?

When was the last time you gazed into the marvel of your own face or the face of another for a with no goal other than wonder, awe, connection and presence?

We live in a society starved for authentic connection yet so often we find ourselves buried in screens and cubicles, or rushing from one destination to the next hardly taking the time to pause, breath and take a good detailed look.

When we set aside critiques and superficial observations, we can shift and learn to look directly and see with an unconditioned eye. Perhaps then we can taste this incredible joy that accompanies entering the mystery of thingness without comment.

This retreat invites us to get up close and take a good look at what is in front of us very directly. What would it be to generate a quality of reverence as we fall into crevasses, wrinkles and creases that life has etched into our skin, our mind? How might we relish and creatively express the bumps, scars, and varied textures of this terrain allowing it to inform our mark and word.making? The more we see, the more we may discover how little we know about our faces, what we are facing or perhaps anything. How marvelous!

How much there is to continually explore—living in the circle of wonder!

This is a courageous practice whether we are studying our own face, scrutinizing the face of another, whether we are the one being studied, or facing what we need to face, we will find challenges. Just as zazen gives us a way to take a raw, unadorned look in, seeing, drawing, moving, and writing live lines offers us the same chance to make direct contact with what appears raw and right in front of us.

A great retreat for those wishing to develop the relationship of zazen and the creative process. No formal training is necessary. Art materials will be provided.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

To be more present and engaged in the world, to be of benefit to others. Vincent
