Learn powerful, safe, and proven methods for reversing and avoiding osteoporosis and osteopenia during the Yoga for Osteoporosis Training.
Given the increasing number of older students attending Yoga classes, teachers need solid, evidence-based training in order to effectively serve them. Dr. Fishman’s Method, consisting of 12 poses, has been proven to increase bone density for students with osteoporosis or osteopenia (the precursor to osteoporosis), and to prevent bone loss in people without those diagnoses.
Discover how to:
- Guide students in the 12 poses of Dr. Fishman’s Yoga for Osteoporosis Method
- Avoid injury in this large, vulnerable population
- Adapt the 12 poses for any level of student yet retain their efficacy
- Teach several preparation and warm-up poses to support the proper alignment of the 12 poses
- Sequence ongoing classes
Graduates of the course will be certified to teach Dr. Fishman’s Method. Those who want to learn about Dr. Fishman’s Method but do not intend to teach are also welcome to attend the training.
The 12 poses of Dr. Fishman’s Method include Vrksasana, Utthita Trikonasana, Virabhadrasana 2, Parsvakonasana, Parivrrta Trikonasana, Shalabhasana, Setubandhasana, Supta Padangusthasana 1 and 2, Maricyasana 3, Ardha Matsyendrasana, and Savasana. During the 20-hour live training, students will have the opportunity to practice the poses, practice teach with each other, and demonstrate their teaching to the presenters at the end of the course, as required for certification.
This training includes 20 hours of prerequisite online material covering the method and the science behind it, plus 20 hours of in-person instruction on how to teach the poses.
Tuition of $1,250 includes $250 online component plus $1,000 in-person.
20 hours of this course are devoted to the processes that create and replace bone, and what goes wrong with those processes that leads to bone loss. Led by Ellen Saltonstall and Dr Fishman, the teaching consists of hour-long webinars with many illustrations. You do not have to brush up on Biology 101; it is a very straightforward section and includes common sense explanations of the virtues and troubles associated with the currently available medicines.
We feel it is important for teachers to be well-educated on this subject, since students will have a large range of questions for which this online component also prepares you.
YogaU will email the online study material upon your registration.
Completion of 20 hours of the online component.
Dr. Fishman’s and Ellen Saltonstall’s book Yoga for Osteoporosis is good additional preparation for the course.
Continuing Education Opportunities
- Yoga Alliance (YA): Approximately 20 contact hours (in-person) and 20 non-contact hours (online component). Total of 40 training hours.
- Integral Yoga Teachers Association (IYTA) can provide you a CE certificate of your program’s total contact hours. For more information, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Certification in Dr. Fishman’s Method is awarded to those who complete the entire 40-hour training with passing grades on two tests (one online and one live teaching) with at least 5 years of Yoga teaching experience. Those who attend the entire course and pass both tests but have been teaching less than five years will be awarded Registered Teacher status, which will automatically convert to certified teacher status when they complete 5 years of teaching. Certified teachers are able to participate in scientific studies, which includes teaching study participants. Certified and registered teachers are also listed on Dr. Fishman’s website, sciatica.org, to which patients and students are frequently referred.
