Color, Light, Line, and Texture Hands-on Workshop 2019
About This Event
Come play in paint, explore collage, and dive into textiles during this hands-on retreat for everyone.
Creativity is front-and-center at this open-to-all weekend. Everyone is welcome: teachers, librarians, writers, artists, and art lovers! NO previous art experience required!
What You’ll Learn
Using paints, paste, and paper, you will be encouraged to create!
We’ll look at how these various techniques can be used in illustration and in your personal projects.
Who Should Attend
Anyone who wants/needs a creative retreat!
Illustrators who want to try some new techniques.
Art teachers who’d like to learn techniques to bring back to the classroom.
Negative Painting with Watercolor
We’ll pour, drip and spatter, then seek out the nature imagery in the resulting color field using negative painting techniques. This technique will exercise both your loose and picky selves and result in glowing finished pieces.
Layering with Gouache
Never fear the blank white page-we will use gouache in it’s transparent guise to tone and establish a composition. Then, multi-talented gouache comes back in its colorful, opaque form and we can add layers until our pieces sing.
Collage meets portraiture meets Calligraphy
Using elements of calligraphy, painting, and collage we’ll compose lush self-portraits with personal mottos and symbolism.
Using a variety of tools we will make marks in foam to create a line art plate which we will print as an etching. Explore different types of line and patterns. Printed pieces can be used as part of a larger composition.
Pastel Painting – Landscapes
Bring a landscape photo for reference or a sketch the Highlights property. Turn your sketch into a vibrant color filled pastel painting using unexpected color. Different approaches and papers will be shared.
Painting on gel plates and glass using natural materials and found materials as stencils and texture. Layering prints to create more complex images. Warning: this can be addictive.
Lauren Castillo will be our special guest. She will share her painted foam printing technique she used to create the backgrounds in her new book, Imagine.
