Air travel to West Kootenay Regional Airport (Castlegar) in winter is very often delayed due to mountain weather. You can fly into this airport from Vancouver or Calgary but during this season we do not recommend it.

In spring, summer and fall, West Kootenay Regional Airport is our preferred airport because it is the closest airport to the Ashram, and there are daily flights from Calgary and Vancouver (Air Canada and Westjet) to Castlegar.

Air travel to Kelowna in winter is much more reliable than flying to Castlegar. One can fly into this airport from Vancouver or Calgary. There are numerous flights from both directions.

Silver City Stage Lines will take you from Kelowna to Nelson. The bus departs from Kelowna at 1:00 pm. In order to catch the daily bus, book one of the first three flights out of Vancouver and the first flight out of Calgary. You need to reserve a seat on Silver City Stage Lines. It can be done online including selecting your seat. The bus arrives at 6:30 pm in Nelson. You will need to stay overnight in Nelson. The Dancing Bear Inn Hostel is an economic, friendly and clean option. There is quite a nice selection of hotels too. The Hume Hotel is the closest to the local bus stop.

From Nelson to the Balfour ferry terminal there are two choices available to you: the city bus ($2.25) (Route 10 North Shore at the SE Corner of Ward Street and Baker Street – not available on Sundays), a taxi (approximately $80).

Air travel to Spokane is reliable as well in the winter.

From April 8 until the middle of December there is no reliable transportation from Spokane to Nelson. You might consider renting a car or fly into Castlegar or Kelowna.
We are just off Highway 3A on the road to Riondel. We are 40 km northeast of Nelson by way of the Kootenay Lake ferry and 80 km north of Creston. Driving times are about 10-11 hours from Vancouver, BC (the ferry is an additional 35 minutes), 8 hours from Calgary, Alberta, and 5 hours from Spokane, Washington.

Coming by car from the west (e.g. Vancouver) to the Ashram, the trip is 10-11 hours. Coming by car from Vancouver travel east on Highway 3 – Hope to Nelson – then north to the Balfour ferry.

Driving from Spokane, count on 5 hours travel time. The border crossing most used by Ashram travellers is at Porthill, ID. You will need a valid passport and your immigration letter (we will send you) to cross the border.

In the spirit of keeping a low carbon footprint, we encourage everybody who is travelling to the Ashram by car and has spare seats in their car to post a ride offer on the Ashram website at Ashram Rideshare Board or to utilize Kootenay Rideshare.

      Held in the Light

Each time I go to the Ashram I come away feeling rejuvenated, full of Light and ready to enter my life at home with new understanding of myself. The days at the Ashram are filled with yogic practices, starting with Hatha Yoga in the morning, courses or Karma Yoga throughout the day and ending with Satsang in the Temple of Light. All these practices are done with reflection, with space given to understand how I act and interact in the world. I find new depths of my Light within. I feel so nourished on every level. The meals are excellent, the rooms are clean and comfortable and the grounds set in the mountains on the lake are so well cared for. When sitting in the Temple of Light I can feel how sacred this space is.

      spiritual home

A place of acceptance and warm invitation. A place I go to re-realize self-realization. People of many spiritual backgrounds are welcomed in the temple of the light. Courses are brought about to invite us to be in authentic ways. Meals ate in silence, and delicious/organic/buffet. Being from Alberta I feel lucky to have a spiritual home and community so close that calls and challenges me to live most high.

      Paradise Found

Magic happens here at the ashram, this place so filled with light you literally feel it as you enter the property. There are many options of how to use your time here- taking classes to allow you to explore the meaning of your life; doing karma yoga to contribute to the daily flow of activities or simply retreat and do your own thing. This is a place to return to again and again!

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

My last retreat at SMC was so inspiring and so relaxing. But i'd love to have more time there to spend at the Stupa, visit the Kami shrine, and generally interact with the beautiful enlightened society happening on that entire land. Brett

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
