A Chamber Music Workshop * Festival * Retreat

 

The Apollo Academy for Health and Humanism – a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to attaining wellness and life fulfillment through the pursuit of a healthy lifestyle that incorporates participation in the humanities – is sponsoring this very special workshop, festival and retreat in the spirit of a nineteenth century Schubertiade.

This three-day retreat provides an opportunity for a unique personal experience with distinguished musician and lecturer Robert “Bob” Greenberg and the internationally acclaimed Alexander String Quartet (ASQ). For this year’s retreat Bob and the ASQ will be joined by acclaimed mezzo soprano Kindra Scharich and pianist Jeffrey LaDeur, Artistic Director of the San Francisco International Piano Festival and New Piano Collective.

Musicians will be joined by a faculty of healthcare professionals and practitioners in the humanities to provide a life-enhancing experience.  Workshops and classes on achieving optimum health and wellness will compliment the cultural activities and programs.

2:00 – 4:00 PM: Afternoon Lecture/Seminar:  Buddhist Philosophy and its Application in Contemporary American Society” (Ratna Ling Staff)

4:30 – 5:30 PM: Pre-dinner segment of evening concert: “At the End: Grief and Transcendence” (Robert Greenberg, Kindra Scharich, Jeffrey LaDeur and the Alexander String Quartet)

9:00 – 11:00 AM: String Orchestral Reading by workshop participants, AAHH faculty members, and guest musicians

DESCRIPTIONS — WORKSHOPS FOR NON-PERFORMING PARTICIPANTS:

1) Cooking, Gardening and Nutrition

This workshop will emphasize the importance of our food in achieving and maintaining excellent health. Participants in this workshop will come to appreciate that by observing some simple “food rules,” many of our prevalent chronic diseases can be avoided.

2) Natural environment

This workshop will involve “nature walks” in the beautiful natural environment of the Sonoma coast and redwood forest that is immediately adjacent to the Ratna Ling Retreat Center. Guided walks will introduce participants to the area’s plant and wild life.

3) Yoga Practice

Jo Lewzey, Apollo Academy’s yoga and meditation instructor, will provide participants in this workshop with an in-depth introduction into the health promoting benefits of yoga.

4) Meditation Practice

Ratna Ling’s meditation instructors will provide participants with a taste of the “meditation retreat experience.”

5) Art of Writing Poetry

Dr. David Watts will dive into the creative process of writing poetry, as well as provide examples of great poetry. Participants will be encouraged to join into a discussion of the process, as well as bring in examples of their own poetry writings.

Menu/Cuisine

All of our meals are organic and vegetarian, made with love and care.

We provide homemade yogurt and granola for breakfast. Lunches and dinners always include salads or salad bar. Each meal is self-served on a buffet table.

Accommodations

14 guest cottages on 120 acres of property. Each spacious, quiet cottage has 2 private rooms, with high ceilings and a deck with a view. Cottages include jet tubs (or ADA shower), towels, deluxe linens, refrigerator, tea kettle, coffee/tea, kitchen sink/counter, diningware, dining table, and living room with a stove fireplace. Free wifi available and a landline telephone.

Guests can choose to have an exclusive cottage for ONE person; a private room for ONE person in a SHARED cottage; or a cottage for TWO people. Any additional guest after TWO is $100 per person per night. Meals and classes included.

San Francisco International and Oakland International airports are approximately three hours south of Ratna Ling by car. Alaska Airlines flies to and from Sonoma County Airport in Santa Rosa which is approximately 1.5 hours from Ratna Ling by car. Unfortunately, there are no shuttles that bring you directly to Ratna Ling, so it is best to rent a car or email us to support in coordinating a carpool with fellow retreatants.
