The Creative Refresh

Event Highlights

  • Your itinerary will include anything from intimate studio visits to immersive discussions, hands-on workshops, unique culinary experiences and plenty of opportunities to put your feet up. In short, you’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at Bali’s fascinating creative ecosystem, with the goal of bringing you some fresh inspirational juice. Expect at least 4 hands-on workshops (where you will be able to take your creations home) as well as delicious meals and experiences like nothing you've ever seen.

We begin with an amazing dinner in one of Ubud's best restaurants on Friday night, before waking up early on Saturday to admire the art of slow coffee at one of our favorite coffee shops.

We spend an hour or two getting to know who we would be spending the weekend with before heading off to the first place. We visit two very different private studios to immerse ourselves in the world of different techniques. We get our hands on some fascinating materials, including the original blueprint method of cyanotype.

The day ends with a dinner in the middle of an organic garden and a magical performance by an architect-dancer’s site-specific piece.

The next day we head to a newly completed private home made of bamboo in the middle of the jungle to dive into the world of Balinese craft, making our own outrageous flower crowns.

Then we headed north again to a delicious lunch at one of Ubud's most special eco-resorts and a few hours around a spring-fed pool soaking in Bali’s warmth and beauty.

Our weekend ended with another special workshop focusing on textile art and eco-printing.

About This Event

The Creative Refresh program offers you an opportunity to relax, connect and grow. We house you in boutique accommodation, introduce you to local creative stars, feed you well (and often), and curate off-the-beaten-track activities.

Bali is like a magnet for creativity. The local culture is known around the world for its rich artistry, striking performances and craftsmanship. You’ll notice subtle beauty almost everywhere — from the way an offering sits in a doorway to the gentle hum of giant kites in the windy season — which is why free-thinkers from all corners of the globe flock here for inspiration.

The expatriate community also contributes to the island’s creative bravado. Together with local inventors, they’ve helped spread Bali’s ingenuity all over the world, through products and businesses such as Green School, Gaya Ceramics, and Threads of Life. We’ll take you into the workspaces of these companies, and many more, to show you how the creative process flows, island-style.

I think the biggest take-away for me was having the time and space to play again. I was beginning to think I’d forgotten how to play, how to explore, how to experiment freely. Having us all travel together was an added bonus. It gave us a chance to process what we’d just experienced and to learn from each other and see each other’s perspectives.

Venue Highlights

We are located in the artistic heart of Bali. Artists were once the first points of contact for the island with the outside world. The first wave of European artists created incredible collaborations with the master artists of Bali. Today, European influences have made way for more Asia-Pacific elements and a whole new scene is flourishing with experimentation with many different mediums, materials and techniques. The studios and behind-the-scenes projects that are underway will leave you breathless. The greens and overwhelming lushness of Bali’s landscapes are legendary. We’ll introduce you to some of our favorite off-the-beaten-track spots so you can take a deep breath in and let some jungle oxygen into your system.

If you take the accommodation package we arrange for you to stay in a fully air-conditioned private room with private bath, hotel room or even a private home depending on your needs and budget.
