A town with a very rich history and long traditions, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. This quiet little town has a beautiful castle, nearby hiking trails, and monasteries worth exploring.
It's an idyllic small town through which the Yantra River runs and terracotta-roofed homes sit on the ridges above it. Though there are all of the modern amenities you’ll require, Veliko Tarnovo manages to maintain an air of Old World charm.
Nearest airport:
Both Sofia and Bucharest have international airports with regular direct flights from many countries in Europe. Veliko Tarnovo is approximately 3 hours from both cities, with well established buss lines and regular busses running between them.
