A Retreat for Psychotherapists and Health Professionals* based on Insight Dialogue
As clinicians and health professionals, skill with relational attunement and repair has been well documented as essential to our clients’ healing. Attunement is the ability to read one’s own and another’s signals, to interpret them accurately and to respond with flexibility and fluidity to the signals sent. Wise attunement also includes the ability to recognize and skillfully repair the inevitable misattunements, or ruptures that are normal in all relationships and that can result in the breakdown, both internally and externally, of collaborative and coherent relationship with oneself and others.
A stable personal practice of mindfulness is a well-established clinical skill in increasing clients’ attunement, both internally and in relationship as it improves the calm identification of one’s own – and others’ – difficult emotions and habitual stories as well as the direct experience of relational connection and disconnection. Insight Dialogue practice applies these skills more directly and deeply into relationship itself. Especially for those who have histories of trauma, the benefits of mindfulness plus the strong relational components of dialogue practice can stabilize a kind awareness that supports insight, deep healing, wise action, and release of unwholesome patterns. Practicing in this way clients can demonstrate courage, confidence, and protection from self and other views that otherwise might lead to overwhelm and isolation.
In this retreat, we will apply the relational meditation guidelines of Insight Dialogue to bring mindfulness and unconditional presence to the moment-to-moment contemplations of relational attunement, rupture and repair. We will directly practice the application of these guidelines to the often-challenging content and the disruptive relational patterns that can appear with our clients who present every dimension of suffering and clinical distress.
Objective 1: Participants will describe and demonstrate in relational practice key components of mindfulness meditation: present-time awareness of body, speech and mind experience both internally and externally, developing skill in applying and teaching mindful presence in their clinical settings.
Objective 2: Participants will describe and demonstrate skill with six Insight Dialogue (ID) guidelines: Pause, Relax, Open, Attune to Emergence, Listen Deeply, Speak the Truth, developing skill in applying and teaching mindful presence in their clinical settings.
Objective 3: Participants will describe, practice and demonstrate how the application of these ID guidelines can be taught and used in clinical practice. They will demonstrate assisting clients to maintain and/or return to self-awareness and unconditional presence while navigating pleasant and unpleasant moments in both intrapersonal experience and interpersonal relationship and dialogue.
Objective 4: Participants will describe, practice and demonstrate how the application of these ID guidelines can be used in assisting clients to identify and repair lapses in relational attunement which manifest internally as their agitated thought and hyper- or hypo- arousal and externally as unproductive speech and behavior.
This retreat is designed for all levels of mental health and health professionals working in a clinical practice. Previous retreat experience and an established meditation practice are considered highly advantageous, but are not required. While offered as a professional training, this program is presented primarily in retreat form. Noble silence is practiced through most of the retreat except when we are actively in dialogue practice together.
Continuing Education Credit (CE)
*CE credits will be offered for beginner, intermediate and advanced practitioners in the following disciplines through Commonwealth Educational Seminars. No CEs will be available for partial attendance. It is the participant’s responsibility to check with their individual state boards to verify CE requirements for their state.
Psychologists: Commonwealth Educational Seminars is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Commonwealth Educational Seminars maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Psychologists receive 28.0 hours of continuing education credit upon completing this program.
Social Workers: Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is entitled to award continuing education credit for Social Workers. Please visit CES CE CREDIT to see all states that are covered for Social Workers. CES maintains responsibility for this program and its content. Social Workers completing this program will receive 28.0 clinical hours of continuing education credit.
Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists: Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is entitled to award continuing education credit for Licensed Marriage & Family Therapists. Please visit CES CE CREDIT to see all states that are covered for LMFTs. CES maintains responsibility for this program and its content. LMFTs completing this program will receive 28.0 hours of continuing education credit.
Licensed Professional Counselors/Licensed Mental Health Counselors: Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) is entitled to award continuing education credit for Licensed Professional Counselors/Licensed Mental Health Counselors. Please visit CES CE CREDIT to see all states that are covered for LPCs/LMHCs. CES maintains responsibility for this program and its content. LPCs/LMHCs completing this program will receive 28.0 hours of continuing education credit.
Nurses: As an American Psychological Association approved provider CES programs are accepted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Every state Board of Nursing accepts ANCC approved programs except California and Iowa, however CES is also an approved Continuing Education provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing, (Provider Number CEP15567) which is also accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Nurses completing this program receive 28.0 CE hours of credit.

For notices received before April 1, your entire payment, minus $50, will be returned to you.
For notices received on April 1 or after, your entire payment, minus $50, will only be refunded if your space can be filled. There is no refund if you leave the retreat early.
