I am forever grateful that my path led me to this place, its beautiful landscapes, its intelligent plants and animals. The night sky brought me to tears. It was the most majestic night sky I’ve ever seen. I felt humbled, grateful, overwhelmed all at once. If the Mother vine and this beautiful retreat are calling you, grab your bug spray and recharge your mind, body, and soul! They empower and assist the healing but you’ll have to put in the work and discipline to truly see transformation. Feel the fear, and do it anyway. What a blessing this is!
Venue HighlightsSet on a highly unique geological phenomenon, a boiling river, Santuario resonates with incredible energy. Known locally as "Shanay-timpishka" or “heated by the sun,” the river stretches up to seven kilometres through the rainforest, enshrouding the area in a vapour of mystery. Possessing great spiritual significance to the communities that surround it, the river is reputedly the home of "Yakumama," the world serpent that breathes life and death into the Amazon. Interestingly, the river has remained a secret in Peru for thousands of years until now, only known to the local communities.
The whole region and surrounding rainforest is fascinating. There are many ancient and rare species of plants and animals, gigantic medicine trees, and an amazing variety of birds, monkeys, and insects. The area was once long ago home to the Cashibo people, famed for their fierceness and refusal to be converted by missionaries.
Santuario is the destination for those who are looking for an authentic experience working with Amazonian plant medicine for healing and knowledge in the tradition of vegetalismo. Many return year after year to deepen their work in this beautiful and mysterious place which is truly a hidden jewel in Peru.
AccommodationsAccommodations at Santuario are simple and ecological, constructed in the traditional palm thatch buildings. Every visitor has their own room, comfortable bed, bedding, towel and mosquito net. The rooms are airy and open to the sounds and ambiance of the rainforest but protected with screened windows.
Please be aware that Santuario is situated off grid on a highly unique geological area in prehistoric rainforest. Water for washing is drawn directly from the boiling river. Thought there are toilets and plumbing, it can be a little erratic due to environmental changes (storms, water levels, etc). There is no electricity nor wifi or phone signal though there is some solar power. Wifi and phone signal can be phone in the nearby village of Honoria.

Menu/CuisineMeals are tailored to comply with the dietary restrictions of a traditional shamanic dieta and are simple, bland, easy to digest foods that do not inhibit the working of the medicine or create unwanted side effects. They include boiled rice (without oil or salt), boiled or roasted plantains, boiled potatoes or manioc (yucca/cassava), cleansing vegetable soups, fresh salads, and at times some (toothless) fish (particularly boquichito). Also served occasionally are eggs. Fruits (mangoes, guava, bananas, etc) may be offered but are not recommended due to their high sugar content. For some dietas, you may require a stricter diet of only plantains and rice.
DirectionsFirst your will need to fly into Lima's Jorge Chavez airport and take a connecting one hour flight to Pucallpa. Our English speaking guide can bring you to the center directly from the airport or collect you from a hotel. The journey to Santuario is an exciting ecotour by itself! You will travel in an all terrain truck along country roads to the small port village of Honoria and take a motorized canoe along the tranquil Pachitea river. From their your will embark on a 45 minute hike trough beautiful hilly rainforest until your arrive at the steamy boiling river, the amazing geological phenomenon that provides the setting of Santuario. Please ensure that you are in good physical health for the journey. Altogether, it takes approximately five hours depending on roads. Rubber boots are needed in case it is muddy.
To arrive in time for an evening ceremony at 8pm, please arrive in Pucallpa by the morning and book your returning flight in the late afternoon evening from Pucallpa. Your guide will meet you at Santuario in plenty of time to bring you to the airport.
The guide service costs 120 USD and includes both journeys.

No facilitators, everybody in the ceremony was drinking the brew and when I called loudly for help a couple of times, nobody moved for a very long time, until my neighbor asserted I needed help. On another occasion, I was brought to the loo by a Aime and then left there without a light for quite some time and in utter panic, because she had to go get water for the toilet. Enrique was often not present at the facilities- sometimes for days. He also claimed I had cancer towards the end of the retreat (!?!), which thankfully proved to be a false claim, but isn’t a diagnosis to just throw at people. After two of the ceremonies with him I heard suggestions in my head that stated in my voice that “I need to stay here, I need to marry Enrique”. I was shocked and felt like I had entered the twilight zone. These suggestions came against my will and mortified me. So thats what it feels like to receive a brainwashing. After the first instant of this, I thought I was losing my mind, but in hindsight it got very clear to me what was done there. He never got outwardly aggressive and I don’t think he ever would, but I lost trust in him during the course of the retreat as there were questionable incidences that made me believe that he had lost -or never had- a professional attitude towards me. One of the staff was also dating a client upon my arrival and then started flirting with me (or “at me” because I certainly didn’t want any parts) behind her back, both of which made me very uncomfortable. One of the english gringo apprentices got flirtatious too and then later aggressive and bullying. I was told he was sent home later, after I sent them my complaint past-retreat. Hope so! Some of the staff was very nice, but some of them were also outwardly rude and you could feel their open resentment for the ‘gringo’ guests reverberating in their conduct. Shame, because the place was very beautiful and inviting from it’s vegetation and the hot river and has great potential. Potential that is being wrecked by unprofessionalism.

To live directly in the rainforest itself is very healing. If you are a person pondering the though that you might go to Santuario then you might aswell already be thankful that the universe has lead to this place! As many others have already stated, it is impossible to forsee how your stay at Santuario will play out, but one think is for sure. It will be good for you and the "rest of the universe". I know that might not help much people to decide if the should go so therefore I will write a couply of things that I experienced: - very nice & open hearted people from all around the world with which we built a bound for life - deep healing on all possible levls (physical, mental, higher spritual consciousness) - deep indivual insights/learnings how the universe works on the most fundamental level TL;DR: If u can manage -> go :) Presonally I would say 1 week is the minimum you should consider. 3 Month would be ideal. 1 Month is very good also as one can manage 3 weeks of dieta and 1 week of ayahuasca

It's hard to find words to describe this experience. The knowledge, wisdom and peacefulness found in the Santuario will stay with me for a long time. You can't get closer to nature than this. And it will change the way you look at things in your own life, and the world around you. It was a real privilege to be welcomed by Maestro Enrique, his family and the team.

Words cannot describe how transformative this retreat was! The place itself is so peaceful and the people were so welcoming. It felt like home immediately. The tambo’s are well kept. It was nice to have our own bathroom with toilette, sink and shower. It feels very safe, which allows you to easily open up and do the work that needs to be done for yourself! You can truly feel the love. Each of the 3 ceremonies were completely different for me, but the Icaros and personal healings were magical. Even in the short amount of time that I was there, I learned how they live off the land and plants. It was difficult to leave this place. I will definately be back!

This was one of the most amazing experiences I have had in my life. I was at Santuario for about a week. Maestro Enrique and the staff at Santuario are so warm and welcoming. His family is so kind! His wife has the voice of an angel. They really made us feel safe and I was pleasantly surprised at how nice the accommodations were. The rooms were spacious and I loved how tucked away in the jungle the retreat was. The boiling river really enhances the entire experience. After only one ceremony there I began to feel the healing. I feel a very strong shift in life and feel that the retreat really help me put my mind back on the right path. Thank you to Maestro Enrique and the healing he has dedicated his life to, very grateful to have shared these ceremonies with him and the staff. You must go and experience it yourself! I was quite speechless.

I had the most incredibly beautiful experience at Santuario healing centre. Enrique and his family have created such a beautiful retreat that made me feel so warm and safe and protected. The location is incredibly magical on the boiling river and all facilities were great. The ceremonies were really special and at all times I felt so looked after by these beautiful people. Could not be more grateful for this beautiful experience!

The stay at Santuario was magical. I didn't speak a y spanning but I was lucky that Simon was there. A shaman apprentice from Canada. I got everything I came for and more. The housing is simple and that for me was part of such a good experience. The nature around a d the boiling river was such a diamond. Both Simon and the maestro took us several plant and tree walks. I'm a biologist and benefited so much from those trips. To learn how they apply the use of the different plants etc. I'm coming back and highly recommend to choose santuario. How to get there. I also booked my ride with Mauro and Juan out to the santuario. At first I thought it to be very expensive. But they bring g you all the way in. I changed my date og exit several times (because I wanted to stay longer) and that was no problem for them. When they picked us up we git to see the art the make (they are fantastic painters, and they can really get out your experience with ayahuasca) several times Mauro showed us around pucallpa the next days. You would not get that from just a driver. The booking I found it strange that the person booking was not nearby santuario. A lot of the information given on what to bring etc was wrong. I think that happens since Angela is to far away and don't know exactly how things are done at the senter. Don't bring: -A filter bottle, the river is boiling its safe to drink - A towel, you'll get one there ***************Response from the center***************** "Thank you so much for your wonderful and informative feedback, Helga! We are so glad you had a special time at Santuario. Santuario is truly a unique and beautiful place and we are all working hard to ensure the conservation of this area. Regarding your comments: While it is true that I can not be on site all the time (I would not be able to offer the online support to visitors if this were the case), I have traveled for many years to the center and know all too well how things are done there. My guides (who you met) keep me apprised daily of things that happen there and we all work together to improve services. My upmost concern is making sure that guests are prepared for their trips in the safest possible way. For this reason, I always recommend guests bring a water bottle with a filter. The community at Santuario has been drinking the water from the boiling river for years but it is far from safe to drink. As a biologist, I am sure you can appreciate how vulnerable rivers in the Peruvian Amazon are to contamination by petroleum, chemicals, and waste as this is one of the most widely known and devastating problems communities have to deal with. I myself have seen petroleum leaking into the water close to the lodge (not a surprise as the river flows through one of Peru's oldest oilfields) and know from tests performed by visiting scientists at that very site that the river has been contaminated also by waste water from up river and contains harmful microbes. As the water only reaches boiling point in some areas and is not close to boiling point in the wet season, the heat of the river doesn't purify it from contamination. As a facilitator and researcher who knows the region well, it would be irresponsible for me not to recommend some form of water purification to guests and I will continue to do so in their best interest. If visitors decide not to bring a filter, they will do so in the full known knowledge of the risks they are taking. All that saying, your comments have alerted me that I need to include this information on the website so that guest can understand better the choice they are making and why it is important to take extra precautions. Believe me, I know from experience the consequences that can occur if simple precautions are not taken with regards to food, drinking water and sanitation in Peru. Many thanks and warm regards

I just came back from an amazing experience at Santuario! It was my first experience with the medicine and it was POWERFUL. I did incredibly deep work there and learned so much in ceremony. Also the beauty of the place is just without parallel. The steamy river, the jungle, the plants...and everyone was so kind. The maestro and his family were so sweet and down to earth. I felt very safe and protected there. I will definitely be going back as soon as I can afford it to spend more time working with the medicine and the family at Santuario.
