Foundations of Mindfulness

About This Event

The practices offered on this retreat emphasize the ancient roots of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), especially the four foundations of mindfulness first taught by the Buddha. Daily meditation instructions, sustained moment-to-moment practice, and a silent environment will all support participants in deepening experiences of both practicing and understanding these essential teachings. Mindfulness in the body, whether sitting, standing walking, or lying down, and including mindful movement, will be a primary support for our practice. Some previous mindfulness meditation experience may be supportive, but is not required. Beginners and those with experience in yoga are welcome.

This retreat is open to anyone who wishes to engage in a silent mindfulness retreat and fulfills the Oasis Institute pre-requisite requirement for silent retreats.

Note: This is a silent retreat, which means the intention is to make a full-on commitment to be present.You are asked to be in silence and turn off your cell phone from the start of the retreat to the end (except in the case of an emergency).The program will include practice sessions that start at 6am and run through 9pm. Self care is supported and encouraged through periods of mindful movement, lying down meditation, mindful eating, and small group meetings with the teacher to discuss practice.

Venue Highlights

โ€‹โ€‹Spirit Fire Retreat Center is a delightful event facility set on 95 acres of private forested trails, green meadows and delightful gardens.

The food at Spirit Fire is a highlight - three fabulously flavored vegetarian meals are served each day, with gluten free and dairy free options available. Fruit and tea are always available for snacks.


โ€‹And for those needing to fly, the closest airport is Bradley International Airport (BDL) outside of Hartford, CT. It is a 75 minute drive from the center. For those needing transportation to Spirit Fire from the airport we recommend Valley Transporter.

For those driving, directions from points south, north, and east are located at (contact info blocked) We recommend you print these out and use them over internet generated or GPS generated directions. Mapquest and Google Maps tend to deliver you to us in a very round-about way. But don't worry, you'll find us!

โ€‹For those not driving, bus routes are available from neighboring cities, including Boston and NYC, to Greenfield, MA. In addition, Amtrak has train service to Greenfield. This service is particularly convenient for those coming from New York City or Boston. Use the link to Amtrak to find if train service is available from your point of origin to the Greenfield, MA (GFD) station.

And whether you choose to arrive via bus or train, we are happy to provide a pickup once you arrive in Greenfield.
