About This Event

Trauma and Ayahuasca:
A pioneer in trauma healing and Somatic Experiencing Founder, Dr. Peter Levine states: “Shamanistic cultures view illness and trauma as a problem for the entire community, not just the individual … People in these societies seek healing as much for the good of the whole as for themselves.” (Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma)

Trauma is a fact of life. It has become so commonplace that most people do not even realize its impact or presence. Trauma is felt by all of us at some stage in our lives and does not result only from what is commonly thought to be its cause: shock trauma from abuse or attack. Trauma can be experienced through misfortune or during routine passages of life, such as surgery, medical and dental procedures, anesthesia, illnesses, and accidents and injuries. Inappropriate or harsh behavior by parents, teachers, and peers, as well as betrayal, financially hard times and the pressure of societal and cultural expectations, can all cause trauma, not only events such as the loss of a loved one, robbery or witnessing violence.

Traumatic symptoms are not caused by the “triggering” of the event itself. They stem from the frozen residue of energy that has not been resolved and discharged; this energy remains trapped in the system, where it can wreak havoc on our mind and body.

Held within the symptoms of trauma are the very energies, potentials and resources necessary for their constructive transformation. Ayahuasca is a profound tool in healing trauma, and with the support of Somatic Experiencing, our healing can deepen enormously, as Somatic Experiencing helps the nervous system to resolve the trauma that the plant medicines can bring up in ceremonies, to inspire and integrate new levels of healing, mastery and wisdom.

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is, simply put, a bio-physiological approach to healing trauma.

What is Somatic Experiencing?

SE addresses our primary nervous system functioning. It resolves stuck symptoms of past adverse events that remain in non-cognitive regions of the brain, such as; relational, developmental or shock trauma.

A somatic approach allows us to be more aware and settled in the felt-sense of our physical restrictions and emotional contractions.

Through moment-to-moment awareness of sensations in your body, SE aims to gently re-establish the natural flow of your life energy, supporting the safe release of symptoms and energy from the nervous system. In SE sessions, we release the past experiences of trauma and restore your body, heart, and mind into a relaxed wholeness.

With a holistic and comprehensive understanding of trauma and somatic psychology, the SE individual and group sessions customize an integrative approach depending on personal need, that includes a holistic framework in the psychological, social/cross-cultural, emotional, physiological, and developmental areas of life.

Your Retreat Maestra

Maestra Juana will be your facilitator for the Healing Trauma: A Somatic ExperiencingTM and Ayahuasca Retreat. Juana is 60 years old and was born into one of the most respected and powerful healing lineages of the Shipibo tradition. She has dedicated her life to the sacred healing traditions of her people and has been studying as a Maestra for more than 30 years. She has dieted extensively on Noya Rao and has expert knowledge of the body and the processes one undergoes when dieting on this mythical master plant. Maestra Juana is also a bone doctor and specializes in massage and bone setting. She will be available to provide participants with a rare opportunity to receive a bone massage whilst on retreat. More about Maestra Juanita >>

It is a privilege to have such an experienced, passionate wise elder to share her expertise and childlike sense of aliveness with us on retreat.

Noya Rao Dieta during the retreat

Noya Rao which is otherwise known as “The Tree of Light” or “Camino a la Verdad” – The Path of Truth is a mythical plant, of which there are only three in the entire Amazon Basin. Noya Rao has belonged to and been used in sacred ceremony by the Mahua Shipibo traditions for centuries. Noya Rao is known for its capacity to activate intuition in the dietero(a), promote mental clarity and to increase one’s capacity for organized thought. Coupling a Master Plant Dieta with silence heightens Noya Rao’s capacity to promote profound healing and to reveal important insights to the dietero (a). Silence alone enables us to become aware of subtle sensations, thoughts, feelings, and messages within; taking time to simply be with oneself without distraction and mindless chatter can help us to become aware of that within us that needs to be let go of, or embraced. In short, silence on its own enables us to glimpse wounds that need our attention and to contemplate what we want from our lives. Noya Rao is, therefore, the perfect companion for this retreat as it accelerates this process of connection and recognition of the wounds within that need transmutation, whilst giving the dietro(a) the courage needed to make positive changes in their behavior and to let go of their limiting beliefs.

Venue Highlights

The Sui Sui Centre houses a large ceremonial space called a Maloca (communal house); it is here that we will where we will participate in our Ayahuasca rituals on several of our evenings. The centre also hosts a main kitchen and dining area and several communal areas, which are excellent for enjoying great conversation with others and admiring the ever-changing lakeside. You will have your own private bungalow, which faces directly onto Lake Cashibocacha. Sui Sui is fully equipped with an emergency fire protocol as well as several fully stocked first aid kits. The camp also hosts several Western toilets and modern showers and hand washing sinks.

Sui Sui has reliable access to the Internet as well as phone reception, however we recommend that you take care of all matters that require your urgent attention prior to joining us on retreat, either while in Pucallpa or in your home country. This will enable you to be fully present and to receive the true healing benefits from not only the sacred plant medicines, but from the superior beauty of the surrounding forest and lakeside environment.

The lake surrounding Sui Sui is remarkably clean and free from the pollution we are accustomed to that characterizes our urban waterways. To preserve the integrity of the river water, we only permit our guests to use biodegradable and chemical free soaps, shampoos and toothpastes. We will have chemical free soaps, insect repellents and shampoo available at the camp for a small fee, but we do encourage you to bring your own.

Accommodations

While at Sui Sui you will be enjoying a private jungle bungalow (or Tambo) with a spectacular view of Lake Cashibocacha. Your Tambo is fully protected from mosquitos by a special screen surrounding the doors and windows. You will have your own comfortable double bed to rest on each night and all privacy you need to recharge and contemplate the day’s events. The Tambo’s are rustic, yet spacious and are guaranteed to offer you an authentic Peruvian forest experience.

Menu/Cuisine

Whilst on retreat we will enjoy three superb meals per day, freshly prepared by the team at the Sui Sui Centre. On the days of our Ayahuasca ceremonies we will restrict this to 2 meals, the last one is not to be eaten after 2pm.

All meals are prepared with the best local ingredients and will be mostly vegetarian with the occasional river fish and organic chicken.

All meals will be free from:

Sugar
Oil
Salt
Pork
Alcohol
Red Meat
If you have any special dietary requirements please advise us upon receiving confirmation of your place on retreat.

I would highly recommend this centre.

I would like to express my uttermost gratitude from the bottom of my heart to the entire crew at Aya Healing Retreats. Elio has created something truly special and put his whole heart into this centre. The crew is incredible. Anna and Elio compliment each other really well, and provide a great balance of masculine and feminine energy. Seeing the two of them work together in ceremony is remarkable. Maestro Don Miguel is interactive, approachable, joyful and funny. He is exactly what you want in a Maestro. He is also extremely knowledgeable of plant medicines and able to prescribe concoctions to almost any physical or psychological aliment you might have. The 12 day retreat far exceeded my expectations. There are many other activities to participate in over the 12 days, enriching the experience and helping to compliment the work with Aya and the master plant dieta. I would highly recommend this centre.

It was my first experience with ayahuasca and I really couldn't imagine doing it anywhere else because my experience was so perfect and profound

I have just come back from an Aya Healing Retreat and I have only amazing things to say. It was my first experience with ayahuasca and I really couldn't imagine doing it anywhere else because my experience was so perfect and profound. The experience is amplified with the Master Plant Dieta where you work with specific plants to aid in your journey. Doing both brought me so much closer to nature and healed my body and my soul on so many levels. My life has changed so much already and I am looking forward to what is to come. I cannot recommend this retreat and the people behind it more. They exemplify everything I want to become. I am so grateful, thank you.

My first Master Plant Dieta at AYA Healing Retreat and it was the best thing in my life !

I just concluded my first Master Plant Dieta at AYA Healing Retreat and it was the best thing in my life ! I have done an Ayahuasca retreat before but the Master Plant Dieta just took me to a whole new level of healing and teachings. My Master Plant was Chullachaqui and after the first part of the retreat, and of my cleansing I could connect with the spirit of the Tree and I received so much healing and finally found my gift. I feel very empowered and inspired by this magical experience and I ready to make the right shifts in my life. Thanks to Mother Aya and Chullachaqui. The curandero Don Miguel is very genuine and loving man, his knowledge on plant medicine is impressive and I highly recommend him as a Maestro to anyone on plant medicine path. Elio is very compassionate and kind and he was such support during my hardest and dark time..thank you so much for your work! I am glad to have the integration Skype sessions with Atira as I know I will be set to success having the sessions to support my integration. Thank you again to everyone at AYA Healing Retreats!!!

      Infinite gratitude

I feel lucky and honoured to have met Elio, who organized probably the best jungle-trip I have ever had. Elio introduced us to the oldest shamanic family of Peru. Elio appeared not only as a reliable and very empathetic facilitator, but also as a close friend and loving ceremony contributor who openly shares his deep knowledge of the medicinal plants and the shamanic way of life. I look forward to meeting him again for many more magical adventures in the future. Thank you very much!

I can't recommend better people to work with!

After many years on ‘the road less travelled’ and the chance meetings with remarkable wonderful souls. I had the good fortune to come into the presence of Maneesh de Moor and Elio. We spent a wonderful time together, this is a reminder for me of what the most beautiful quality of love and connection in my life can be. The most magical places and time remembered, such events are rare. As we all look back into our lives, we remember those quintessential special moments of bliss, joy, enlightenment to the opening of your heart space, our kinship to all. This encounter with Maneesh and Elio was one of those times. Their love and support is boundless. Their music transcends the spirit to the indescribable. Very rarely do I recommend 2 people to work with, but feel honoured and bound to say to everyone who reads this. They are the gifts for you, to spend time with them in something so special, for YOUR LIFE — Namaste. Bodhi Madito.

I highly recommend working with Don Miguel

Don Miguel was one of the shamans teaching my 10 week initiation course. All of the Shipibo shamans and staff were absolutely amazing but I connected with him the most by far. He was the most approachable; I found it easy to interact with him, he seemed the most capable of bridging the connection between the Shipibo culture and our western culture. When I wanted a pipe I asked him to make one for me because I wanted his specific energy in it. I felt I had a lot to learn from him. I love his joy, the way he effortlessly expresses it in every moment of his being, the way he laughs without attachment or restriction. He is very comfortable in his own skin, quirky and interesting in his teaching style. He also had a way about him when I interacted with him or watched him interact with others that helped me become conscious of my fears. His singing during ceremony had a profound effect on me. Other shamans had more direct and penetrating energy, he had a way with his singing that induced a therapeutic trance in me that aided my ability to learn how to bring my body into a vibration capable of creating healing. Other shamans did it for me and it didn’t stick. He soothed my mind enough to help me surrender into my intuition and experience a higher vibration on a molecular level that I could uphold long after he stopped singing. I found his style to be feminine in a way, a very good way. He taught me by gently circling the “problem/opportunity” with his singing, giving me an opportunity to unwrap another layer in a relaxed, gentle yet focused way. This feminine way made me feel like I did it myself, I released on a molecular level by relaxing into a trance and reprogramming my brain from that state of mind. I highly recommend experiencing ceremony with him

      A wonderful ongoing process

Drinking Ayahuasca has helped me to find my way back to myself and has opened my eyes to a new understanding of reality and a new perspective on life. Ayahuasca opened a door to a new world that I was scared to enter before. Ayahuasca is a teacher and a tool, once you have the knowledge it’s up to you to create your life and to put the teachings in action. This work is a wonderful ongoing process. Elio is very loving; a happy and balanced person. He radiates a very strong, positive energy that makes you feel completely comfortable. Helping others is his priority in life.

      An Amazing Journey

I was very nervous but excited at the same time as I anticipated the next journey on my spiritual path. I am not usually one for going to new places on my own especially when I don’t know who will be there or what would be happening. When I arrived, I was greeted by Elio with a warm inviting smile and a lovely big hug. He made sure that I was at ease. He explained every detail of how the retreat would unfold and made sure that I was comfortable before doing anything. There was never any pressure. The retreat brought amazing insights from past lives and revealed future ones waiting to be discovered … Wow! My body felt cleansed, relaxed and energised by the time the weekend was over and to be honest, I didn’t want to leave. I felt so safe and loved; a feeling that I will never forget, it was so uplifting, a wonderful feeling of being one with the universe itself. I have no hesitation in recommending this retreat lead by Elio who certainly endeavours to make your experience a most amazing, enjoyable journey in finding your true self. Thank you, Elio, for such a wonderful and caring experience.
