Penetrating Wisdom: The Aspiration of Samantabhadra
About This Event
Shambhala Online is delighted to announce a new course by the Dorje Löppön Lodrö Dorje. This course is open to all Vajrayana practitioners.
This course will study the commentary on this famous aspiration-prayer by Ponlop Rinpoche and the Fifteenth Karmapa, with reference to Shambhala and vajrayana teachings by the Sakyong and the Druk Sakyong. This aspiration is a powerful statement of how to relax into the original ground of basic goodness.
The talks will be broadcast live from Halifax on the following days:
Sat March 9
Sat April 6
Sat April 27
Sat May 18
Sat June 8
The main practice for this class will be the Sadhana of Mahamudra and some mahamudra instructions. For more information, and or register go to Shambhala Online.
Some topics that will be addressed:
the importance of Guru and lineage;
the primordial purity of the basic ground of all;
the key point of recognizing intrinsic awareness, usually covered by our mental activity;
the two paths of opening to wisdom-confidence, or following habitual coemergent ignorance;
the importance of mindfulness;
opening to a sudden glimpse;
fear and fearlessness;
sudden vivid experience as an opportunity for awakening;
the five wisdoms and buddha activity as natural presence of the basic ground;
how coemergent ignorance and primal fear begin samsara and the six realms;
coemergent and labelling ignorance and the buildup of samsaric conditioning;
how the shock of luminosity triggers the principal conflicting emotions;
how the conflicting emotions and realms may be liberated.

Thankyou for providing an opportunity to connect with my sangha. After the techno glitches I was able to settle in and connect. I did feel a strong connection to others and self. I’ve been basically in self isolation for the past three years and this is a welcome addition to my practice. And so I sit... in gratitude ????????❤️ Kathryn

Thank you for offering this. I found it difficult to stay with the practice, I think due to the formless nature of it, and also the length. I was hoping for more context up front but ended up leaving before the practice portion ended so missed the talk and discussion. It was nice to see everybody though. For me I would have liked to start with a short talk on the context through a dharmic lens, then a shorter, more focused practice, discussion, more practice, etc. Thanks again.

I enjoyed practicing with community both within the local sangha and the people tuned in on-line in real time. I loved the linking the Dorje Loppon made to Shambhala teachings and other sources. Loved the teachings. The main strain was on the sound quality of the Dorje Loppon, perhaps because of on-line microphones needing to be muted? It was garbled often.
Sandra Brooks May 01, 2019Mahamudra Retreat at Kootenay Shambhala Meditation Centre
This was my first time to attend one of the annual Kootenay Shambhala Meditation Centre's Mahamudra Retreats. It was a truly amazing experience in every way, from the depth of the teachings to the teachers, staff and participants. A beautiful setting with exceptional hospitality, well organized, rich in the dharma. I appreciated that it was experiential and balanced teachings with time to relax and integrate the teachings. I will be back!

Shastri Rodgers and Acharya Chapman leading the retreat still moves me so. Their realizations and experience contributed greatly to the retreat for me. The coordination before, during and after the retreat from Sally and Tim, Gaila, and Margaret also made the entire experience relaxed and inspiring. The preciousness of spending March 30-April 7 with sangha practicing and studying was a huge impact on my life at this time of turbulence and uncertainty in our international sangha, with the Sakyong gone away to India for an unknown length of time. The daily schedule of practice, study, and rota was very reasonable and relaxed. The meals were super delicious. The good fortune to stay at the center for billeting was especially appreciated. The magic of the teachings, particularly Acharya Chapman's skillful integration of klesha, Buddha families with the Ashe Mahamudra and the inclusion of White Tara and Dharma Sagara and Shastri Rodger's Lujong sessions were powerful for me. I came home with deeper understanding of Mahamudra and how to integrate buddha famiies, White Tara and Lujong into my daily living. The wealth of resources provided during the retreat, such as the Retreat Sourcebook and the Pith Instructions, are very appreciated. And I look forward to continuing to refer to these resources in the coming year. The cohesiveness of the retreatants that have been coming annually provided a rich, loving and connected container for me as a newcomer to the annual retreat. I pray that the annual retreats will continue. Deep bow and tremendous gratitude to all, Linda Murphy

Amazing retreat as always. My only suggestion is to increase the afternoon break back to one and a half hours to give participants enough time for a good walk or hike.

I liked the people and the space. I liked the different exercises the most. I have been trying to remember the concepts from the texts, especially the idea of crazy wisdom. I felt a bit out of place at the centre. I think it has the right intention but it can come off as being kind of snobby. This does not change the joy I got from taking the course and meeting the instructors and participants. Thank you so much! :)

Great course. Russ and Lynne as co-facilitators, well you couldn't ask for a more competent, experienced, insightful duo. Great mix of experiential exercises and insights into some of the harder to interpret texts. Loved it!

I absolutely loved the Level V course. John was great to listen to (not alot of talking but enough instruction and insight). The Warrior Inquiries were my favourite part. The exchanges and sharing in an open and respectful manner (ie: listening) was great. Thank you to all who helped put this level together. I look forward to the next part of the path.
Ina Weber April 27, 2018Ashe Mahamudra
Just as last year, with this Ashe Mahamudra retreat, my view and practice has been refreshed. I really enjoyed it all the way around! Every year the teachings seem to deepen for me and are always fresh again. The aimless walks in Nelson are delightful! Nelson is a great environment for such a retreat, enough stimulation and yet quite time. The center is beautiful! I was very comfortable staying at the center this year. If I can and if there will be another retreat next year, I would like to attend again! Thank you! Ina Weber

I recently completed a week long meditation retreat at the Kootenay Shambhala Centre. It was a wonderful way to spend seven days. Insightful, challenging, connection, profound, and kindness are some words that come to mind when I reflect. Thank you to Russel Rodgers for the teachings he offered. The most enjoyable part of each day was listening to him speak. Thank you to Margaret for keeping us fed with delicious, nutritious food so that we had the energy to do the hard work on the cushion. Thank you to everyone who helped organize the program and kept it flowing smoothly. Thank you to the participants for helping create a safe and welcoming container to practice in. 5 stars. Highly recommended.
Louis Butterfield October 12, 2017A Greater Sense of Community
For nearly two years I've been frequenting the Kootenay Shambhala Meditation Centre and have been amazed and delighted by a few aspects of their culture. 1: They welcome everybody in with an open heart and are genuinely CURIOUS about the people that visit their centre. 2: They aren't pushy. 3: They're earnestly trying to help themselves, others and society become more genuine, more gentle and more compassionate. 4: It isn't an escape from our daily life. Though the centre does provide a space wherein you can come to learn and practice meditation, these people stress the importance of infusing our seated meditation practice with all aspects of "the daily grind." Overall this centre is a safe, elegant and mindful space to meet other practitioners of open heart and open mind. Very much recommended.
Anie Boudreau October 01, 2014Kindness in every corner :)
This centre is so very beautiful in every way. So much love went into creating this sacred space, that you can pretty much feel the kindness oozing out of the walls. :) The staff and members have always gone out of their way to make me feel welcome. It has now become my second home. I am so grateful for all the amazing teachers and programs offered here that have helped me soften as a human being and be more awake in this amazing world. Much love <3
Hoda Ghamrawy October 01, 2014The Art of Being Human Retreat Weekend
Spacious Centre full of Light and welcoming, a friendly community. It was the second time I signed up for this weekend retreat and it was simply marvelous. Breathing...let go of levels, let go of expectations and simply listen to a wise lady laugh and share her joy of living the teachings. Breathe...touch and let go... Simple sacred steps...breathe...it is all life and it is all joy and the teachings are there to help us simply be the basic goodness that we are...not a self improvement weekend...the art of being human...a practice that brings it all in...practice...a life long experience... In and out...in and out...in and out... Lady Yeshe Tsogyel gracing the Shrine Room. A community, a sangha that lives its potential... My potential...I identify with Lady Yeshe Tsogyel and I see her in all the participants and the teachers around me and in me... In our own way we are all Sky Dancers... oh and the food was good too. The centre a beautiful spot to meet oneself... The neighbours sing and the doors are open. Acceptance at its best...The river is indeed flowing and the drums beat and we practice the art of being human within the Stanley Street sounds... I feel gratitude and I feel blessed. Thank you very much one and all.

I showed up for the opening of the newly renovated Kootenay Shamhala Meditation Centre. It was my first time in Nelson and I honestly didn't know what to think. When I stepped in the door I was greeted warmly by one of the members and invited into the centre. All in all It's a fantastic space, a really wonderful place all around. Whether you're new to meditation or are looking to connect with other members of the community, the Kootenay Shambhala Meditation Centre offers everything you'd ever want in a community meditation center.
