About This Event

Sri Lankan Traditional Way of the Warrior - Join us for a rare and unique opportunity to become part of a lineage of teachings that stretches back thousands of years…  Be one of the first to discover and explore this incredible martial art form in its native homeland of Sri Lanka. Come train with us in one of the most stunningly beautiful and natural environments, away from the noise and rush of the world. Experience the serenity of the Sri Lankan countryside and its culture.  Enjoy healthy and delicious farm to table meals prepared in the traditional way and specifically suited to the Angampora way of life…

The Retreat - We are so pleased to be offering our first Angampora retreat, quite possibly the first one of its kind.  We have a high-energy program lined up for you in the most idyllic location. Morning and evening sessions take place either in the lakeside yoga shala or in our jungle gym and last between 2½ – 4 hours.

Together we will learn the fundamental movements of Angampora including body conditioning (Warrior Yoga), basic footwork, strikes, locks, take-downs and ground fighting, moving on to practical applications, forms, and weaponry.

Afternoons are free for practice and rest and to enjoy the many offerings provided by The Mudhouse, including hiking, cycling, swimming, kayaking, bird-watching and cooking classes.   An Angam martial artist’s training is not considered complete unless, in addition to the fighting art itself, he is also skilled in the art of drumming so our evenings will be filled with the beats of “Berawadayana”.

Meals are meticulously prepared in the traditional Sri Lankan way using clay pots and firewood.  And most of the food comes directly from The Mudhouse farm.

Warrior Diet -All meals and snacks are included and our special menu is prepared the traditional way, using clay pots and firewood.  Much of the produce is sourced from our own organic farm, with other ingredients purchased locally from farmers or from the market in town.

Our meals are prepared according to what is in season and most fresh. We don’t tend to serve much meat as we find it hard to source quality produce locally. Fish, however, is a different story. Being surrounded by lakes and only 30 km from the coast, there is a range of sea and freshwater fish available throughout the year.

Vegetarians will be happy here as well, as a wide selection of grains, pulses, seeds, vegetables and fruits are prepared daily – many in ways you may not have come across previously.

A traditional Sri Lankan cooking course is also included for those who would like to make some of these exquisite dishes at home.

I think here with Angampora the spiritual side still plays an important role which also was a reason for me to come here, because I wanted to see something which is more pristine compared to all the martial arts which are already largely focused on competition. Angampora is much more about the tradition, to unify spiritual with the bodily. In here Gurus teaches that spiritual and physical strength go hand in hand. The lessons learnt in the jungle and temple institutions are carried from not only the fighting pits but into the real world - Christoph Hoffmann (Germany)

Event Highlights

  • Angampora- Angampora is the traditional martial art form that has been shrouded in secrecy since ancient times. Indigenous to Sri Lanka its roots stretch back over 5000 years – it was once a very integral part of the Sri Lankan way of life. It is a complete and holistic system, rooted in Buddhism, Hinduism and includes elements of Ayurveda, meditation, music and astrology. Forced underground by British rule, Angampora survived due to the dedication of a few gurus and clans who continued to train in secret and has only recently made itself accessible to the general population to learn. This is a tremendous opportunity for those who are interested in becoming part of this fascinating and powerful tradition. And by doing so, help to keep this part of Sri Lankan culture alive.
  • Prerequisites:
  • No previous martial arts experience is required
  • Should be in relatively good shape and able to perform basic movements with some degree of cardio endurance
  • Strong will and determination
  • Participants should begin preparations as early as possible by following the preconditioning video

Schedule

Our days will begin early to the sounds of nature. Morning training lasts about 3hours and begins with a quite vigorous and intense set of conditioning exercises and warrior yoga. From there we practice footwork and fundamental movements before moving on to learning forms.

Followed by lovely breakfast time to rest, excursions and lunch. Afternoon training also lasts about 3 hours and consists of practical applications and weapons training, then we move to the Meditation session, Drumming, rest and Dinner.

Venue Highlights

Flanked by lakes and blessed with abundant birdlife, wildlife and natural beauty, The Mudhouse is the ideal location for our retreat. Fun and friendly, this laid-back lodge offers a unique chance to experience rural Sri Lankan life in all its colorful splendor.

The Mudhouse consists of clusters of uniquely designed huts spread throughout a large expanse of forest land. All huts are constructed with natural materials, using ancient techniques with a distinctly modern twist.

Each structure is designed with comfort and relaxation in mind. Whilst all the individual layouts differ, the facilities are essentially the same. Accommodation for the retreat will be shared.

All huts have outdoor showers, indoor bathrooms, dining & lounge areas and relaxation spaces adorned with hammocks and mats – all designed in a style that befits the overall aesthetic and ‘back-to-nature’ theme. All huts are equipped with binoculars, cool boxes, mosquito nets, towels, blankets, bird books and a bike each for exploring the property.

There is no mains electricity in the guest areas at The Mudhouse. Lighting at night is provided by plentiful candles and lanterns as well as subtle, solar powered LED lighting. The local village was connected to the national grid in 2012 and we now have power in the office for charging phones, cameras, ipads or whatever other gadgets you bring.

Staying at The Mudhouse is a little like stepping back in time to your own village in the jungle and to a more simple way of life, where things move at your pace.
