Venue Highlights

Madhuvan Ashram is located on 150 acres of a dry jungle mountain in the Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. More specifically it’s halfway between the beach town of Sámara and the inland town Nicoya, 40 mins in both directions.

The infrastructure of Madhuvan is rustic and the natural setting is in the world, but not of it, and so in a sense out of this world. The sun rises around 6 am and sets around 6 pm all year and the average temperature is 86˚ F/30˚C. The wet season starts in May and goes through November, the two last months being the most intense, whereas the first five are lighter in rain. There are howler monkeys, pizotes, armadillos, iguanas, and other beautiful and exotic native wildlife co-existing with us. For people who are new to the tropics, we recommend bringing bug repellent. In addition to the wildlife, we also have our own herd of cows that live thoroughly protected lives with us.

We have a daily routine of kirtan programs in the temple twice a day, at 6:00 am and 6:00 pm. Retreat guests are welcome to join these programs and just as free not to join. Other than the temple activities, guests can also participate in seva (selfless community service) around the grounds, such as gardening, harvesting fruits and vegetables for meals, milking the cows, processing milk, etc. Most are pleasantly surprised at how meditative and calming these types of activities can be!

Depending on who is here, the ashram residents can provide additional activities such as Reiki healing, making coconut oil, and vegetarian cooking classes at a modest add-on fee.

On the property are a couple of hiking trails and in the wet season, we have our own waterfall going into a man-made pond called Dauji Kunda.

As we are an ashram we ask that no meat, alcohol, drugs or cigarettes be consumed on the property, to keep the sanctity the place.

Please also refrain from wearing micro-shorts or bathing suit-type attire, unless you are swimming in our lake, or at one of the excursions in which case it is of course appropriate.

The nearest international airport is Liberia (LIR - Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport). A shuttle minibus can be arranged from there and the ride is about two hours. The last stretch up to the ashram requires a 4x4 vehicle, so the staff will pick the guests up from the bottom of the road.

Accommodations

Madhuvan Ashram offers five "modern rustic" guest cabins with a ceiling fan, and two comfy beds each. Every cabin has a small porch with 2 chairs overlooking the jungles, where you are free to sit and relax, or gather with new friends.

Each cabin has free WiFi (the wifi is shockingly fast and reliable!), a bathroom with shower and hot water. There is an open closet and baggage storage area in each cabin as well. Cabins are all outfited with a skylight for daytime, and electric lamps and plugs for any nighttime reading, or charging of devices.

The guest cabins are a hilly 10-minute walk from the main area where the temple room, dining hall, and kitchen area. This makes them ideal for quiet moments away from main activity areas.

The water from our wellspring is fresh and safe to drink - so feel free to drink from any sink tap!

Menu/Cuisine

During retreats, the monastic staff will cook and serve three vegetarian* sattvic (pure, clean) meals per day.

Breakfast usually consists of freshly harvested fruits, yogurt and milk from our cows, and some baked goods.

Lunch and dinner is generally rice (or other grain), with several vegetable sabji (curry stews), and other various sides such as samosa, puri, chapati, etc.

Most of the fruits, vegetables, and spices we cook with at Madhuvan are grown organically on site! If guests wish, they may help with food harvest &/or meal prep seva.

All dairy used in our dishes comes from our own herd of protected (and pampered) cows.

All of our food is cooked according to temple standards, and offered to our deities before being served, making it prasad - blessed and auspicious!

Our food is served on stainless steel platters, or on natural banana leaf. We follow the traditional Indian style of sitting on the ground, though we do have some chairs available for those who may prefer to be seated. However, we do not have tables, so guests in chairs will need to still eat directly from their plate.

The main kitchen is for the temple staff only, but guests are welcome to use the fridge and stove in the secondary kitchen by the dining hall.

*Vegan meals can be accommodated if we are informed in advance.

Directions

The nearest international airport is Liberia (LIR - Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport) - we recommend flying into here. A shuttle minibus will be arranged for guests from there to the ashram, and the ride is about two hours. The last stretch up to the ashram requires a 4x4 vehicle, so the staff will pick the guests up from the bottom of the road.

The other option is to arrive at the San José airport (Juan Santamaria International Airport, not be confused with the one in San José, California, U.S.). Shuttles from this airport are NOT available, though we may be able to help you arrange for a ride. The drive from there would be 4-5 hours depending on traffic. If you will be arriving seperately from the LIR shuttle, please do inform us in advance of your arrival time, so that we can provide directions for your driver, and also know when to plan to meet you at the bottom of the road for a lift up to the property in our 4x4
