About This Event

Dennis McKenna’s prolific career in ethnopharmacology, botany, and psychedelic science spans a wide variety of disciplines, avenues, and countries. He has given numerous lectures on topics ranging from plant medicines, to consciousness, to spirituality, to pharmacology, and has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed scientific papers and written books, including “The Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss: My Life with Terence McKenna”, and “The Invisible Landscape” with his brother Terence. He has also organized conferences, served as principle investigator for various research projects related to ayahuasca and other plant medicines, served as professor of Botanical Medicines and Ethnopharmacology, and conducted extensive fieldwork in the Peruvian, Colombian, and Brazilian Amazon. You can read his full bio here.

Dr. McKenna’s advisory role to Soltara and extensive knowledge of psychedelics and plant medicines has informed our mission of spreading high quality information about these healing modalities. As such, we are excited and honored to be hosting Dr. McKenna for a special week of integrative medicine work, November 10 – 17, 2019. Offering a series of lectures and workshops as adjuncts to ayahuasca ceremony, Dr. McKenna will weave his scientific and cultural understanding of ayahuasca, psychedelics, consciousness, science, and spirituality throughout the week, providing an opportunity for participants to dive deeply into the world of holistic healing, from both an objective and experiential perspective.

Guests will embark on a journey of self- and world-discovery, as Dr. McKenna takes us through topics such as:

Climbing the Vine: 45 Years of Ayahuasca: Ayahuasca has been the focus of my professional research in Ethnopharmacology since I first came to Peru in 1981 to conduct fieldwork for my doctoral thesis at the University of British Columbia. Since then it has become integrated into my own spiritual practice while continuing to remain important to me as a subject for scientific investigation. I can honestly say that my most interesting travels and personal adventures as a scientist and human being have been due to ayahuasca. In this workshop, I will share some of these personal reminiscences plus a brief overview of some of the science behind this mysterious medicine.

Origins of the Imagination: Speculations on the Antiquity of Consciousness: No one knows for sure when consciousness first emerged in our species but we can speculate about the environmental and evolutionary forces that contributed to it. One major factor was the controlled use of fire, which stimulated the migration from arboreal to savannah environments, and vastly expanded nutritional options, contributing to omnivory. Fire also provided the fundamental tools needed for pharmacology and chemistry. Migration into savannah environments would also have brought ancient hominids into contact with Psilocybin mushrooms that co-existed in this environment as symbionts on ungulate species that were also major food sources for the hominids. Accidental or deliberate ingestion of these species may have been a catalyst for the emergence of cognition, symbolic thought, and language. The fossil record is incomplete, but we find evidence of human consciousness in the artifacts that show evidence of abstract thinking and internal visualization.

What is not Patented is Prohibited: The Exploitation, Ownership, and Criminalization of Nature: Indigenous people have accumulated an intricate and deeply-rooted knowledge of their biological environment. Historically, outside nations have come in and utilized this knowledge and plants for their own purposes, benefiting greatly from them but with little to no reciprocity for the indigenous stewards of such knowledge. As a result, there is a current cultural clash between modern nations and those who have maintained the ecological habitats and knowledge of these plants. This talk discusses the history, current issues and concerns surrounding indigenous knowledge, intellectual property rights, and “biopiracy” – the theft of indigenous knowledge and genetic resources.

Join us November 10 – 17, 2019 for a week of integrative medicine work and deep spiritual healing, combining the time-honored practices of traditional Shipibo shamanism with an in-depth look at some of the most fascinating topics facing humanity today.

We are called to serve medicine in sacred ceremony with integrity, humility, and compassion. By creating a safe space and working only with experienced, well-intentioned healers and facilitators, we uphold the lessons of the medicines and build a foundation of mutual trust, authenticity, and respect. We are not gurus, preachers, or enlightened beings – our healers are maestros who humbly transmit the knowledge and healing energies of the plants, and our facilitators are devoted to helping guests face, process, and explore difficult experiences and emotions, handle projections, manage expectations, and surrender to the process. We strive to uphold the highest integrity in everything we do and be a beacon for responsible, safe, and ethical practices, such that our guests feel safe and supported to get the most out of their healing.

Dear fellow travelers, if you are thinking of a plant medicine retreat, go to Soltara. It's a beautiful place with tremendous support staff. You will be safe, secure, and cared for. The grounds are beautiful with mature plantings, the rooms are air conditioned and the food is great. I got healing on levels I never expected. The whole experience is truly a gift. I believe I will be back.

Venue Highlights

At Soltara, we work with indigenous Peruvian Shipibo female and male shamans, and have decades of combined experience working at top-rated Ayahuasca retreat centers in the Peruvian Amazon. We are honored to promote the expansion of plant medicines and holistic health in an accessible, respectful, informed way.

One thing that we noticed at the centers we came from was the strong focus on the retreat experience itself, with much less emphasis on the before and after – but preparing for the work and effectively integrating the lessons learned into your daily life is as important as learning the lessons themselves. As such, we want to provide a space to experience these medicines directly, but also ensure that we provide the tools and resources for anyone to begin, continue, or integrate their healing journey, in a way that is best for them.

Our approach to these objectives is three-fold:

- We work with a highly experienced clinical psychologists and integration specialists as part of our preparation and integration support team. These team members have a foot in both Western and traditional medicine practices, understanding health from a holistic perspective that incorporates the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. We offer individual and group sessions to help you get the most out of your experience.

- We provide high-quality videos, informative content, and educational resources surrounding holistic healing, shamanism, indigenous culture, psychedelic science, spiritual practices, and tips for preparation and integration, among others.

- We invite you to co-create a community with us that fosters open dialogue and a safe platform for people to connect, learn, heal, and share their processes with each other. We at Soltara have found, through our experience, that so much of healing comes from being vulnerable, breaking down walls, letting people in, and holding space for others to do the same. When we authentically share stories, struggles, and ideas, we open up the space to figure things out on a deep level and remember that we are not alone.

The crucial first step to healing the world is healing ourselves, and there has never been a better time. The decisions we make on an individual, societal, and global scale over the next few years will determine the trajectory and course of our survival and our legacy. This is a mission and a movement that is bigger than all of us, but that includes us, and thus it is our humble hope to contribute in whatever way we can, and empower you to do the same.

We offer different room options and pricing to ensure that a high-quality healing experience is accessible for a variety of budgets. Every room includes all amenities and features listed below.

For those who prefer privacy and quiet, this luxurious and spacious suite features a king-size bed and accommodates a single guest of any gender. Also includes a free 1-hour massage with our licensed massage therapist.

We believe healing even takes place in the kitchen. We take on the mantra by the Greek physician, Hippocrates: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” We honor the role of food in our lives and expand it beyond its primary purpose of bodily nourishment – food can be an avenue to dig deeper into ourselves, consciously looking at our patterns and mindsets surrounding not just what we eat, but how and why we eat what we do. Our eating habits don’t just affect our mental health, they also reflect it.

At Soltara, we aim to help you jumpstart this process of connection through conscious cooking on all levels. Diet is an important part of the healing process, both on its own and also to help prepare the mind and body for plant medicine work. We work closely with our shamans to prepare wholesome, delicious meals that adhere to the traditional dietary guidelines of working with ayahuasca. All of our meals are freshly prepared in-house by our loving kitchen staff. From fresh smoothies and juices every morning, to plant-based meals emphasizing local, organic, and sustainable produce, to lean proteins such a chicken and fish, we celebrate the rich local flavor of Costa Rican cuisine, and offer a chance to experience a connection to the land and culture while nourishing the body, mind, and spirit.

Please ensure you reserve your spot for your retreat with us prior to booking your flights. If you have any questions during the registration process or are concerned any health conditions (including bipolar, schizophrenia, or psychosis) may prevent you from attending a retreat, please contact us first.

We offer pickup on Day 1 (Sunday) of your retreat at 12 PM from the Hampton Inn and Suites, located about 15 minutes from the Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO).

We recommend arriving the day before, on Saturday, and booking your stay at the Hampton Inn, in order to give you time to relax and settle in before beginning your journey to Soltara.

If you plan to arrive on Sunday, we recommend booking your flight to arrive by 9 AM that day, to allow time to get through customs (which can sometimes take up to 2 hours) and get to Hampton Inn in time for the 12 PM shuttle. You will arrive at Soltara around 4 pm that day, after an approximately 2 – 2.5 hour ride through the beautiful rolling hills of Costa Rica, and catching a 2:30 pm ferry ride across to Gulf of Nicoya. We are located about 10 minutes from the ferry port.

Our retreat packages end on Sundays. If you are returning to SJO, please book your departing flights after 3:30 PM. You will be returned to San Jose by 12:30 PM.

We look forward to supporting you in an immersive experience in nature, community, and medicine!

A safe, professional and authentic place for your journey

I was blown away at the beauty of Soltara. It's in the middle of the rainforest surrounded by nature, ocean and wildlife. The staff were very experienced and professional, they helped me every step of the way. For me safety and experience were paramount and Soltara delivered on these fronts. The Shamans were very authentic and powerful. Ayahuasca opens you up to the spiritual realm, and I can say I felt very safe in the care of these Shamans. We had about 20 people in our group and almost 90% of them had deep journeys. I wasn’t able to connect deeply but I would definitely go back to Soltara to try again. I think it’s important to share that not everyone has a deep experience and it's best not to have too many expectations going in. The facilitators have been so supportive in helping me integrate and understand my journey. I also get weekly integration emails that share tools and tips that help me process my experience. I would highly recommend Soltara to anyone looking to embark on an Ayahuasca journey. They have created such a professional, comfortable and authentic experience and are committed to helping you heal and integrate. You're in great hands with this this team! I hope I get a chance to go again and connect deeper with Ayahuasca... that would make this a 5 star experience!!!

      Soltara Experience

I booked Soltara last minute (the week prior) and am still revelling in the after glow. I have been back three weeks. I can't speak to what others can expect from the plant (my experience was life changing) but everything within Soltara's control is first rate. The group bus ride to the centre is a great way to casually get to know the group. Ours was a nice size of around 17 people. There is a nice schedule of mandatory and optional group sessions which are informative and enlightening. A good balance with more than enough time to swim in the ocean. The staff genuinely cares. When I was purging (aka vomiting) I noticed a facilitator out of the corner of my eye approach and crouch down to ensure I was ok. There is no judgement or airs of spiritual superiority from anyone: whether you have been on your spiritual journey for years or are a businessman having an existential crisis (like me lol) they can relate. If you need someone to talk to they are available anytime...literally. The yoga is great with hands on support for different skill levels. Food was healthy and ample. I can't recommend the place enough. For me I wasn't ready to go into the deep dark jungle of Peru for my first experience. Costa Rica is a nice intro. The plant isn't for everyone. There are highs and lows but coming out of it it really feels like a hero's journey. And this was a great place to do it.

      Incredible journey of personal growth

I received so much from attending the retreat at Soltara. First off, the facility and location is excellent. They provide comfortable rooms to sleep in with stellar views, great fresh foods to eat, and a number of beautiful areas to relax in. The ceremonial Maloka was magical and a really authentic place to have the ceremonies. And the healers and facilitators were absolutely supporting in every way possible. They truly have a gift for this work. Secondly, working with the plant medicine itself. It was a powerful experience for me. The medicine provided me with a deeper understanding of all the life lessons I have been going through up to the present day, leaving me With a really tangible feeling that it all had a purpose. I was given a deeper connection to myself, everyone and everything. It was such a schooling in spirituality, energy work and inter-connectivity of all beings, something which I had never experienced on this level before. If you are on the fence about doing ayahuasca, because you are unsure where to go, let this be the permission you required to do it. Visit Soltara, you won’t regret it

Knowledgeable & Experienced Core Staff with Years of Experience in Peru

What a wonderful Shipibo style plant medicine retreat experience Soltara ! What an immense joy to be in a psychedelic retreat where I felt like I was among peers, With whom I could enjoy high-level conversations like: “So what IS the difference, visually speaking, between black vine & cielo vine?” What I really loved about this retreat center was there a focus on healing grounded in the Shipibo indigenous paradigm, And commitment to Upholding a lineage based wisdom tradition. There was no whiff of “How can we transform as many lives as possible AND make a lot of money while doing so?” Which, sadly, I feel is an underlying driver in many ventures & providers That do not have a commitment to respecting culture or partnering with the indigenous, but rather focus on how ayahuasca can be used to “manifest what you want in life”. The core staff all have many years experience in Peru… I learned so much through my conversations with each person than when I was actually in Peru myself in the early 2000’s, largely because back then that they were way fewer western bridge-makers than there are now. We need our Western bridge-makers, they fulfill a much needed role. We need providers of ancestral medicines who truly care about what’s happening in the Amazon, who are knowledgeable about the plants, harm reduction & indigenous culture. If you wish to participate in a plant medicine retreat or ceremony as a customer, please DEMAND THIS. [+] ASK Your provider what their social responsibility program looks like. [+] ASK The people pouring you a powerful medicine that could profoundly transform your life and have lasting impacts on your Psychological emotional and spiritual well-being... [+] WHERE EXACTLY were you trained, by WHOM and for HOW MANY YEARS? 2-4 weeks of plant medicine dieta does not make a qualified shaman or facilitator. Only when you as a customer demand accountability & reciprocity to the indigenous Who shared this medicine with the world - will this industry become safer, more inclusive, and socially just. Haux Haux.

      Beautiful people, beautiful place.

Soltara is a divine place, where if you bring an open heart and a desire to heal, then you will find profound love, wisdom, and intelligence. From the healers, to the facilitators, to the staff, and to the groundskeepers, Soltara exemplifies the best humanity has to offer. Love to all!

      Out of this world!

Soltara and the team are fantastic, everything about that place gave me confidence to face my experience with openness. The surroundings are beautiful which just makes it just so comfortable to process all that is occurring...Thank you Soltara...

Everything about this facility and their staff exceeded any expectations I might've had... by far. From their user friendly website relieving any and all travel anxieties, to the post retreat following-ups educating you on integration and absolutely EVERYTHING in between that you can imagine is BEYOND magnificent. Words can't describe how grateful I am to have stumbled upon the cosmic gem that is Soltara. Don't take it from me, go and experience it for yourself. You deserve it.

  • Thivanka   August 07, 2019

      Amazing experience!!!

This was my first Ayahuasca experience hence I was very nervous not knowing what to expect. People at Soltara were very professional and I felt safe every step of the way. I am so glad I went to Soltara. Amazing views from the room and star deck, well thought out diet plan, and a magnificent integration program. Highly recommended.

  • Heather Sosa   July 28, 2019

Soltara is the place to go!!

Soltara is a well organized and well constructed retreat. More importantly, the staff is superb. They make you feel welcome and safe, not to mention, they are all very knowledgeable. The food is fantastic and the scenery beautiful. The healers are authentic and care about the work they are doing! I can't say enough about Soltara and the wonderful experience that i had there. Highly recommend.

Beautiful place, people, and experience. I will return someday.

  • Yelizaveta Lipina   June 16, 2019

      Excellent experience!

I had such a great experience. Highly recommend to anyone who has a calling to try ayahuasca or is curious. Wasn’t sure what to expect but spending time in a little slice of paradise, eating super clean and connecting with the medicine was the best way I could have spent my time. The team was super kind and the ceremonies were super special. I will be back one day!

  • Herman Watson   June 11, 2019

I recently completed a week long four ceremony ayahuasca retreat at Soltara. I have also attended a nine day retreat at The Temple of the Way of Light and I found Soltara to be consummate in every respect. I had worked with the maestra in Peru and her husband joined her for our retreat. They are powerful healers, a point of view shared by everyone with whom I spoke and I hope to work with them in the future. The meals were everything one could expect in such an environment or any environment for that matter. The staff at Soltara was impeccable and the two facilitators while commanding respect were very approachable and gave support and consultations throughout the week. The integration director was spot on as well as the integration therapist who has been leading an online integration circle with our group since the retreat. I’m going back to Soltara in November and I also have friends and family to whom I have already commended Soltara. For a retreat to be at this level of excellence after being open a year portends greater things and I believe it will become the gold standard in ayahuasca internationally. On a final note, Soltara is addressing the troubling issue of extractionism by bringing in healers from the Amazon Basin for a couple of months at a time rather than removing them from the local communities that they serve in the Amazon. I commend the owners of this facility for that and I highly recommend Soltara without reservation.

  • Megan Moore   June 10, 2019

      Beautiful experience. Highly recommend. <3

I can not recommend Soltara highly enough if you are looking to experience and work with Ayahuasca. The property was beautiful - set high on the hilltop, with almost a 360 view of the surrounding area, making for beautiful sunrises and sunsets; access to a beach and hiking trail. There is ample area to explore and quiet spaces to reflect. The staff was, for a lack of a better term, amazing. The facilitators provided wonderful support throughout the whole experience, not just during ceremony. Throughout the entire week, the facilitators were always available to talk and answer questions. They also provided very detailed and helpful information in regards to the process and ceremonies, as well as valuable information for integration. The yin yoga sessions before ceremony were very beneficial as well. Whatever I say here won't do justice to the amount of love and support I felt from the team at Soltara. For me, working with plant medicine is always a vulnerable and raw experience. Knowing I was safe and supported throughout the entire week gave me peace of mind that allowed me to deeply open and focus on the things I needed to without worrying about being taken care of. Highly, highly recommend. I will be back! <3

      Working with the Shadow

It was the best week of my life. People from all over the world who in a few days have become one. The structure of the week and the staff are just perfect. I leave Soltara Healing Center as a new man in body, mind and spirit.

  • Blake champlin   June 09, 2019

      Great place

My 3rd retreat and first at Soltara and first in over a decade. This place is amazing. The facilitators are fantastic at what they do. The accommodations are quality with great views and access to 2 beaches that didn’t get much traffic from the public. The food can be a little bland at times but that is ok and part of the diet. There is always good fruit to munch on except during certain hours on ceremony nights. You’re paying for the reputation, safety, and their knowledge of running ceremonies here as well as a piece of mind. You walk away with something new and incredible. I went on a treat with Dorian Yates. Dorian and all of the others that came for the retreat were fantastic people. We put ourselves in emotionally vulnerable positions in front of each other that created special bonds between all of us. If you and your retreat companions do the same thing, you will also make new bonds that will last a lifetime. It is well worth the effort to go one time in life.

  • Natasha Kingsbury   June 04, 2019

      Blown away

This was my 13th time drinking ayahuasca and my first time at Soltara. I was blown away. From the travel getting there(easy flights, easy bus ride, beautiful ferry ride and a provided dieta lunch) to the resort style sleeping quarters and ocean front access for down time. I was deep in the jungle doing the hard, personal work with vacation comforts to recover and fully rest. I’ve never experienced a more organized, helpful and supportive staff. The tools and preparation they gave from start to finish made me wish my first experience had been as such. Everyone was given a “hero’s journal” that included tools for ceremony prep, integration, journal space, etc. The meals prepared were delicious and there was always water and fruit available throughout the day during the eating windows. We had a laundry day where our clothes were cleaned for us and returned that day as well as our rooms cleaned everyday. The ceremonies themselves were held in the traditional Shipibo way and there was never a time I felt alone, helpless or unsafe. I really can’t recommend a healing center more. I will be referring Soltara to anyone who asks me and I definitely will be going back anytime the medicine calls. Thank you to the incredible staff who are clearly there for the right reasons. Nothing but gratitude💚

I would go again tomorrow if I could!

Soltara was a life changing experience for me. The most unexpected part was how close I became with the facilitators and other guests. I walked away with a a whole new family, that I will cherish forever. The Ayahuasca itself is such a beautifully hard and blissful experience. I recommend it ten fold to anyone wanting to really do the work and receive the reward of what that entails. But Soltara did a beautiful job at facilitating it. They eased us in and I always felt safe and supported. That is VERY important when working with the plant medicine. The facility and food were incredible too! I was afraid for no sugar, salt or caffeine all week but Jesse crushed the menu every day! So thankful for this week with you guys XO

      The BEST Plant Medicine EXPERIENCE

Just finished my 7-day retreat at Soltara. It's been a life-transforming experience, beyond all expectations. It was important for me to feel safe and trust the expertise of the amazing, hard-working staff. My deepest gratitude to facilitators, and the shamans for their dedication to plant medicine in such a powerful way. If you are considering to have an Ayahuasca ceremony, Soltara is THE PLACE to do it. You are in good hands. The resort is beautiful, food incredible, and you get to look at the magical night sky from the star deck every night! Will be back, for sure.

      Paradise and Transformation

Best week of my life so far!

Soltara Team, Thank you!! The week at Soltara from the 13.01.2019 was the best week of my life so far. Life-changing would be the best way to describe it. It was a lot of exhausting work but oh, so worth it! What i learned was way more than what I could have ever expected or imagined. The medicine, the staff, the grounds, the group of peole i met there - everything came together to provide a very safe and supportive environment to go within and heal. A big shout-out to the shipibo maestros americo & angela, they are out of this world- and the facilitators! kendra, scott, you are incredible. Also a big thank you to carolina you are such a gorgeous soul and an inspirational woman, you gave me hope. If anyone is stuck in their spiritual journey and life on this planet, feel like they are not getting anywhere in life, or are struggling with some deep personal issues (or really, anyone at all), this is the place for you. I really believe everybody should make this experience!

  • Amadeus Grossi   February 18, 2019

Thank you Soltara for what was a life changing experience!

I do not usually write reviews, if I am being honest, but I felt that I would be doing an injustice by not taking the time to write this one. Anyway, thank you to the facilitators and everyone at Soltara who made my experience what it was. I am so grateful. Apart from the healing that took place between the medicine and myself, you guys did such a great job in making this retreat complete as a whole. First of all, the retreat centre is beautiful. I could tell as soon as I arrived that someone had put their heart into this place, and that was a running theme with everything throughout my stay. The facilitators really made it their top priority to make themselves available to us in any way possible. They were really good at helping me understand everything and feel comfortable with what I was doing, which, being my first ayahuasca experience, really helped me feel solid about my decision. Also, any questions I had about what came up during my ceremonies, they were great at answering in a way which empowered me to find my answer, which is what this whole journey is about. Also, the itinerary was so well thought out. The way they organized everything really helped me (and everyone else) move through the week with ease. They don't just take your money, throw you in the deep end with some plant medicine that you know nothing about (besides a few articles and youtube videos, lol), and then leave it up to you to figure out the rest... It was clear that they had mapped everything out for a specific reason, and that reason was for us to get the most out of our experience. I won't go into much detail about this, I'll just say to let the experience unfold and trust that Soltara and crew know what they are doing. And I appreciate the big effort they put into helping everyone integrate what we experienced into our lives. Trust me, when going back and forth from this plant/spirit world to everyday reality, this is important! I should also mention that the food was awesome. The chefs are really talented and creative, and when you are eating food that excludes the use of salt and sugars, and basically everything that I am used to (maybe even addicted to, lol) it really helps! Also, every day's menu is put together in a certain way, once again to help you connect with the medicine as much as possible. Lastly, the medicine itself. I was a bit unsure at first if everything I read online was true, and that this wasn't some hoax or placebo effect that everyone was just hyping up. Long story short, it really proved me wrong, LOL. Again, I won't go into details, as this experience will be unique and personal to every individual. All I can say is I got what I needed to learn from it. Thank you again to the medicine and to Soltara for a life changing experience.

      Healing with love ❤️

What a wonderful place this is. The beautiful souls that guide you here during your journey , so gentle and loving, so respectful to the process. The individual approach and genuine concern is so re securing and gently removes the fear and nervousness. The healers, amazing. The rooms are very comfortable, with an amazing view of the ocean and sunrises. The feels are so rustic and close to nature without distractions except for the billions of stars you can watch on the stardeck . And maybe the jungle noises :) The heart of it all, the Maloca is a beauty. Feels like two warm arms wrapped around you. Two individual beaches are close by , just to watch the waves or swim. The food is made with love and you can taste that. Especially the bliss balls. Something different every day. If you have special needs or you don’t like cilantro, they will make something else or adjust it for you. And than the integration program and aftercare. Follow up when you are back home. So important and so needed. Soltara radiates love and care and if I could give more than 5 stars I would. I know I will be back here. So so grateful !

A fantastic journey with professional team

Soltara’s team was very impressive for me, upon arrival, I was amazed by the view and the surrounding energy, the whole process was not as I expected since I’ve had several ayahuasca ceremonies before, it gave me so many enlightened messages in a very unexpected way, a very surprising way, that showed my way, revealed to me what is the next to do, what not to do. I sincerely wish everyone who is seeking enlightenment or the biggest truth of oneself to have the chance to drink ayahuasca, it’s beyond life-changing. Come here, to Soltara, with Mother Nature under the stunning night sky, you’ll know who you really are.

      Beautiful, Authentic, Worth Every Penny

If you're looking for an authentic ayahuasca experience run by kind, incredible people who truly understand and honor the process, come to Soltara. If you're looking to experience this surrounded by some of the most gorgeous, breathtaking scenery on the planet, come to Soltara. If you're not sure WHAT you're looking for, but believe plant medicine could be the next step in your healing, come to Soltara. This is a magical place. I cannot say enough great things about it. It is worth every penny and more. Making the trip there is one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. Everything from the accommodations to the stunning natural surroundings to the menu to the activities they offered to the ceremonies themselves was incredible, and clearly designed with true healing in mind. There is a perfect balance of modern conveniences (U.S.-friendly outlets! A gorgeous swimming pool!) with natural immersion (the center itself is tucked away on high hills, surrounded by hiking trails through the jungle and two separate beaches, each about a ten-minute walk down the hill.) I encourage you to look through the photos from the center, and then know that the views are even more dazzling and rejuvenating in person. The medicine itself is powerful and pure, and you are allowed to decide how much of it you want to take each ceremony. And the staff are incredible guides throughout the process. Everyone there is so open, kind, and inviting, and so obviously there for the right reasons. They understand the hard work and intention and multiple steps involved in healing, and are so supportive and insightful every step of the way. This was my first experience with plant medicine and they helped calm my initial nerves, work through what I experienced, and let me know that I wasn't alone--that there was a community of people who could listen and understand and share their perspectives. I'm so grateful to every single person I interacted with there, from the shamans to the facilitators to my fellow retreat-mates. I also loved the little trips they scheduled on off days. The boat tour to Isla Tortuga and around the Gulf of Nicoya was an absolute highlight--you get to snorkel, see an island full of monkeys, AND get some free time on the beach (and more!) Every single aspect of this retreat was better than I could have ever dreamed of. If you are even starting to entertain the idea of taking an ayahuasca retreat, I strongly urge you to support Soltara. They are working hard because they want to fundamentally change lives for the better, and they're doing just that, the right way. It's also a compelling reason to visit one of the most naturally beautiful places on Earth, to reconnect to both the planet and to yourself.

      Beautiful soul defining experience

Where do I truly begin? The week I spent at Soltara center truly changed my life for the better. Words can not adequately express the beautiful ceremonies that took place there. Their absolute commitment to respecting ancient cultures is truly amazing. The ceremonies were ran by real shaman who grew up immersed in the original culture that they are a part of that date back to the beginning of time. The staff there are all experienced with plant medicine and ensure your experience is healing and authentic. Their commitment to integration is un paralleled. The accomadations are top notch and ensure you have the creature comforts you are familiar with ( wi fi and AC). Their meals are 100 percent organic and sourced locally and prepared by top chefs. THE VIEWS are jaw droppingly amazing. I have met life time friends there and watched amazing people grow and heal. It was an absolute perfect experience and one I shall never forget. I wish I could give them 100 stars.

      Can’t thank soltara enough!

Soltara healing center was a dream come true. I can’t thank them enough for the truly life changing experience I had (and I don’t say that lightly!). Everything exceeded my expectations, from the amazing facilitators, shamans, pasajeros, staff and our guest, Dr. Joe Tafur. From the very first moment I emailed soltara showing interest in the retreat, I received nothing but the most thoughtful and caring attention. Then, arriving at soltara, I was transported to the most expansive and beautiful facility in the jungle and within that, the safest and most nurturing container of community. Before, during and after ceremony were all moments of transformation. There is always someone to support and help you if you’re going through a hard time. My first ceremony was quite intense and challenging, but with the unconditional and personalized support of the staff, I journeyed into the most powerful remaining 3 ceremonies, downloading messages and lessons to so many questions I came with. Everything clicked. They also created a journal to help guide us through our healing process and I couldn’t imagine going through that week without it! Plus, the food was heavenly :) I recommend soltara to anyone that is curious about the medicine and finding one of the most supportive and loving groups of people to do the challenging yet life changing work of healing and letting go. So much gratitude for the opportunity <3

      peaceful + nurturing environment 💆🏼‍♀️

Waking up every morning to a view of the ocean each morning set the tone for another restorative day. Every single staff member was sweet and attentive, I felt genuinely cared for and I am so grateful to them for their kindness! They were knowledgeable and intentional in every interaction. I went with my boyfriend, but had I been by myself I would have felt equally safe and comfortable. I will be back. ps. the food was excellent

      1st Timer

I had never been to a retreat before. Part of it was, of course, that most of the retreats are in remote areas, in the middle of nowhere, that are not only very hard to access, but also have, in a way, harsh conditions that I am just really not up for. This place was none of that, except well, maybe in a bit of a remote area, far enough to where you get privacy and can actually see the stars, but close enough to where if something happens to you and you have to go to, say a clinic, you can. I had an amazing retreat with the most wondeful group of people. I´ll start by saying the infrastrucuture of the place is absolutly beautiful, the rooms are spacious and have an amazing view of the ocean and the mountains, the dinning and pool area also have amazing views and great architectural details, and the Maloka is big and comfortable. (I personally suggest spending at least one night here, it´s very nice with the jungle noises and the breeze). The place is also at a walking distance from the beach and has a couple trails that are perfect for cross country if you are into running at all. Now, the people, faccilitators and staff, were wonderful, absolutly wonderful people. They worked really hard throughout the week and you can tell they put all of their heart into it. The staff is also super friendly, the chefs are amazing cooks and its very admirable to see the awesome dishes they come up with given the seasoning and ingridient restrictions. Although we did not share a lot with the cleaning staff, they seem very sweet and all the areas always looked on the spot. Like I said, this was my first time in a retreat, so I havent really experienced other places, but this place sets the bar really high. Thank you guys for everything!

      This is for you <3

This is the first class ayahuasca experience. Leave the tarantulas and the riverwater toilets in Peru and come to Costa Rica to enjoy the same authentic ceremonies with real shipipo shamans. Feel free to relax in the pool or take a trail to the beach ten minutes away. Enjoy the ocean view from the star deck. Or retreat to your room for wifi and air con. The food is excellent, the staff is some of the sweetest people you'll ever meet and you'll be in good hands throughout your stay. It's not even that expensive. And flying to Costa Rica is much cheaper than flying to South America. My dear friend, I recommend Soltara with all my heart <3

      Perfect in every way!

After going to Peru 4 times for Aya retreats I decided to try somewhere new, and I am so glad that I did! There is no comparison between the dirt, inescapable heat and bugs of the jungle in Peru, and the total comfort found at Soltara. The rooms are very clean and comfortable with A/C and beautiful strong hot showers, the beds are super comfortable too. The facilities also include a swimming pool and a short walk down to your choice of two beaches where you can swim or just relax the day away. Most importantly though are the people who work there. The facilitators are some of the most wonderful, caring and compassionate people that I have ever had the pleasure to meet. They are there for you anytime that you need them for anything. I cannot say enough about how much love these amazing souls showed toward every guest. They all seem to have been born to do this work, and they really seem to enjoy it. The chef makes eating healthy so delicious that I have been inspired to change my eating habits at home and try to emulate what I learned from my meals there. My retreat included a midweek boat tour of the surrounding area to see the local wildlife, and to go snorkeling with tons of beautiful tropical fish followed by lunch served beach-side on a nearby island. There was also a nature hike that was well rewarded at the end with a swim under a waterfall that nature has carved out of rock on the side of a mountain. The ceremonies are magical! The medicine is brewed in the traditional Shipibo manner without any of the additional, sometimes dangerous plants that some centers use. The brew at Soltara only contains Ayahuasca and Chacruna, these are the only plants that are needed to insure that you have an amazing life improving experience. I loved Soltara and everything about it! I have found a new home away from home and I will return.

Thank you!

We're glad you've joined our retreat community. See you around :)
