This experience is like ancient high technology—a sacred medicine whose use was lost for millennia, only recently rediscovered. Archaeological evidence suggests that the Bufo alvarius toad was once revered, especially in regions of Mexico and near the Colorado River. Whether from the desert or the riverbanks, the toad’s medicine is a powerful entheogen that connects us to something far beyond the mind.
For most, the journey follows three major phases—though not always in the same order or intensity.
1. The first is ego death: a deep confrontation with the illusion of identity, where everything you’ve believed about yourself dissolves. This can be deeply challenging—the medicine has a way of speaking directly to your constructs, confronting your strongest convictions.
Surrender is not easy when the self you've built over a lifetime begins to vanish.
