Pura Vida, Pure Joy Yoga Retreat

About This Event

Costa Rica has been named one of the happiest countries in the world, mostly because its inhabitants (Ticos) don’t stress about things the way most others do. They live 'Pura Vida' the pure, simple life of no worries, no fuss, no stress and with gratitude for nature, family and friends.

What keeps you from living your happiest, most joyous life?

What would it feel like to choose to live your life happy, without anything needing to change?

“To be spiritual is to move back into that natural state which is happy without cause. That is what you have to learn to connect with, experience and express. As long as you are dependent on a cause to make you happy, the absence of that cause will make you unhappy.”

-Swami Niranjanananda Saraswati

The yogic path teaches that joy is our spirit's true nature. Giving yourself the time to slow down, to connect with others, to enjoy nature, and practice the many facets of yoga is a great way to bring yourself back to that naturally joyful state.

Being in a country where so many embrace 'Pura Vida' and were natural beauty is abundant will support your ability let go of the stress, worries and fuss, and embrace a simpler more joyous and true way of being.

We, as teachers, have experienced the joy of what one of our teaches calls 'unreasonable happiness', the state of being happy for no reason at all. We would love the opportunity to share unreasonable happiness with you while we enjoy the pure Costa Rican experience together.

We are everyday people that know about stress, life challenges, and physical discomforts in the body, and have experienced how yoga can help us accept challenges as opportunities to grow closer to our true selves!

Over the last several years of guiding retreats in Costa Rica, we have seen many amazing, diverse souls really light up with the joy of the practice, the new connections, and the whole adventure, and go home transformed. We hope you will be one of them this year!

We are both Kripalu yoga teachers, with many years of practice and in depth studies with an array of teachers from which to draw for our teachings.

We will be leading you through yoga practices that help you to experience the joy and peace of a mindful, simple, nourishing, accepting approach to the body, mind and soul.

As teachers, we will offer compassion, and encourage deep self-acceptance by providing variations in the physical practice to honor all individual needs. We share the beliefs that yoga is about freedom and that the mat is your refuge.

The mat is a place to slow down, to find more stillness, so that you can come back to yourself. When we create enough space and simplicity, we are more easily able to reconnect with our true nature, joy.

“Silence is essential. We need silence just as much as we need air, just as much as plants need light. If our minds are crowded with words and thoughts, there is no space for us.”

— Thich Nhat Hanh

This retreat, led by a team of two experienced, compassionate and joyful yoga teachers, offers you a chance to experience Pura Vida...

start and end your day with a yoga practice with no distractions except the sounds of the jungle,

learn how to use your yoga practice to find joy in simplicity,

enjoy the natural calming beauty of both the jungle and the Pacific-coast beaches of Costa Rica,

enjoy amazingly tasty and healthy meals (made with mostly organic and local ingredients) without having to do any of the work to prepare them,

relax in the peacefulness of an intimate, low-key, eco-resort connecting with new friends.

We all love to travel, but the stress of travel can sometimes leave us feeling not so great at the end of a vacation, and needing to rest when coming home. At Vida Asana, and through the yoga practices, you will feel well cared for and able to rest and go home refreshed.

We also love food - good, healthy, nourishing food! Finding healthy and delicious food, when traveling, can be a challenge and expensive.

Vida Asana, the small eco-resort that will be our host, takes all the stress out of travel and provides really high quality food, all in a beautiful environment.

The amazing water, refreshing beverages, and to die for coffee and fresh fruit, will leave you feeling ready to truly enjoy the experience.

The ease of the whole experience will allow you to relax into your yoga practice without any concerns of making dinner, getting to work on time, sending that email....

If you are like us when at home, despite our commitment to the yoga practice and healthy eating there is all too often distractions or demands that pull us away.

Whenever we have had the opportunity to immerse in a multi-day yoga experience we have experienced coming away more joyful and more grateful for the simple joys of life, and ready to share this joy with those in our lives. This is what we hope to offer to every one that joins in this experience.

I went to this retreat last year. Loved it. The classes in the morning and evening were just what I needed. And lots of time to do my own thing throughout the day. Instructors were exceptional. Resort and food were great. I would highly recommend it.

I went last year and words cannot express how incredible the experience was for me. I highly recommend it and hope to go again in the future. The yoga was amazing - of course. The facility and people there are so cool. The countryside gorgeous and the day trips fantastic. Go if you can, you will love it!!!

I feel so privileged to have experienced this Yoga Retreat. Your detailed planning made it so easy and comfortable enough to brave this on my own.  Being deaf plus shy is always a  struggle especially in groups but everyone was so kind and considerate . Meeting and bonding with all these diverse friends was an extra bonus. Honestly, I can't think of anything you could have done to improve this because everything was clearly communicated ahead of time due to your extensive planning.

Down to the Details...

      Absolute love!!

Vida Asana family, you created an experience that was equal parts personal growth + adventure + relaxation + wonderful conversation. I didn't really know what to expect, as this was my first visit to Costa Rica and Vida Asana but within minutes of arriving on the property I knew I made the absolute right decision. Start of rainy season was perfect - less crowds. The food, of the food ... all I can say is "amazing". :) Sean, Frank, Lauren, Karen, Veronica, Alexis, and Frank want you to enjoy this piece of heaven as much as they do - from helping with translations, to coordinating excursions, to just making sure all was ok ... such a beautiful place. Showed up solo; never felt alone. Already looking forward to next years visit. Cindy New Hampshire, USA

      Vida Asana

I spent a week at Vida Asana Eco retreat as part of a Yoga practice week and to re-connect with myself. The retreat itself is nicely located, close to a smaller town and also only about 10 minutes by bike(which are provided) to the beach. The accommodations are efficient, rooms are air conditioned and clean. The staff is very friendly and so are the 2 cats and 2 dogs at the retreat location who like to be petted. The grounds are well kept and the resort has a pool and many lounge chairs to catch some rays and read a good book. There also is a hammock station with I think 4 or 5 hammocks for your use. The Yoga Shala is beautiful and mats, bolsters and blankets are provided along with some bug spray if one should need it. The food is phenomenal and served 3 times a day, lovingly prepared by Frank the chef and the other kitchen staff. It is mostly vegetarian (which I am not) but so delicious that I didn't miss meat once. There is many things you can do around the retreat (bike, hike, swim, shop, relax) or book some excursions for a dshungel hike or surfing or zip lining or paddle boarding. Mario the driver is sure to get you there and back safely. I really enjoyed my stay there.

      A beautiful peaceful yoga retreat!

My family and I spent a week at Vida Asana this May and when the time came we were not ready to leave. The staff and volunteers were always friendly and available. The rooms were comfortable and well equipped to stay cool. The food was made with great care and better quality than most resorts I have been to. All of the meals were amazing and always accompanied by a delicious smoothie. There many gathering and relaxing spaces to hang out around the property including the hammocks, deck and the beautiful pool. The shala was a perfect place for our morning and evening yoga practice. Every afternoon we used the bikes for an easy ride to the beach at Playa Hermosa. Vida Asana is a place we hope return again and again.

      Absolutely would recommend!

Cannot speak highly enough of my experience with Vida Asana. The staff were personable and accommodating, and the space was even more spectacular than I had anticipated. Will absolutely recommend to anyone seeking accommodations in the area!

      You Aced it!

Thank you for all the work you do in preparation for the retreat. The seemless organization between the two of you allows the participants to feel very well taken care of and affords the opportunity to explore and extend ones practice. One of my goals had been to ameliorate all ramifications of my sprained ankle Leaving the tendon tears themselves as the focus for further healing. Your attention and support allowed this to happen, with range of motion and reduction of related discomfort attenuated. I appreciated your holding the times of the yoga sessions sacrosanct so the yoga was not secondary to the other adventures. I liked the addition of the vinassa and really liked the readings, though I think I would have preferred a selection of one, rather than a more extensive reading at each juncture. I like to read from books I have of Taoist or Buddhist Meditations and stories daily and work hard to discipline myself to. ‘Not read on’. Personally, when theres ‘too much” I tend to not think of any of it;) In that light, I was left considering (from the beginning reading) thinking of ‘the seat’ in asana and I had wished for a slowing down to find that place. Inmy daily practice I hold everything I do for at least two minutes with a goal of trying to find it. As I was doing so many more asanas and stretching of my practice at the retreat , I would have relished more times to have found the place of ;’no effort’. I appreciate that this is highly personal and not something which either you or anyone else might find particularly interesting as a focus.... Namaste.

      Beautiful Birthday Vacation!

I spent my birthday at Vida Asana on a surf & yoga retreat and it was the greatest gift I gave myself in celebration! I'll start out the review by sharing that I extended my stay an extra day because it was such an incredible experience! If it wasn't for my job, I would have stayed longer! My goal was to surf and practice yoga but I received so much more than what I set out to do. The accommodations were perfect with a spacious room that included a balcony, private bathroom, mini-fridge, room sink with 9x filtered drinking water and an shelving unit that contains a rack to hang clothes and folded items within. As someone who has celiacs disease, is lactose intolerant and several other food sensitivities, I was truly blown away with the meals provided in the package! Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all plant based & gluten free so I was literally able to eat everything at every meal (which I can't even do in NYC where I live) and every item was nutritious, delicious and made with love! The community within Vida Asana is beautiful, everyone who works there becomes your family sharing your joy, light and love through all the work they do to ensure you and everyone has an amazing experience. I cannot wait to go back to Vida Asana for another retreat!!! Thank you Vida Asana, PURA VIDA!!!
