Writing the Mind Alive

  • San Rafael, CA, USA
  • Aug 29 - Sep 1, 2019 (4 days)

Event Highlights

  • What is it like to really hear yourself? Unlike ordinary hearing, it’s like entering a world where you know yourself differently than you did before. Following certain simple rules while you write opens a gate to this blissful realm. The more you immerse yourself in this practice, the further you travel from ordinary self-judgments, and the greater your confidence to think in new ways.
  • Through Proprioceptive Writing (PW) you can: quiet your mind, focus your thought, clarify your feelings, and ignite your imagination. If you feel cut off from creative expression, you can reconnect to your authentic voice through PW.
  • For the last thirty-five years, Linda Trichter Metcalf, originator of PW and co-author with Tobin Simon of Writing the Mind Alive, The Proprioceptive Method for Finding Your Authentic Voice, has pioneered writing as a way to heighten consciousness through inner hearing. At Immersions, Linda guides you towards hearing yourself in new, often liberating ways.
  • Newcomers and experienced practitioners all learn together.

About This Event

Proprioceptive Writing® (PW) is a method for exploring the psyche through writing. Easy enough for anyone to learn, PW is practiced to music in 25-minute sessions, alone or in groups, under conditions that are designed to promote relaxation and reflection.Through a process we call “Inner Hearing,” PW teaches you to listen to your thoughts with empathy and curiosity and reflect on them in writing. Practiced regularly, this simple yet powerfully effective method gradually opens a path to self-trust.

Other frequently reported benefits include:

deepened powers of attention

increased self-confidence

greater intimacy and spontaneity in relationships

enhanced emotional health

awakened spirituality

Through PW, people increase their creativity and feel their minds expand, one of life’s greatest pleasures. Widely recognized as an adjunct to the healing arts and as a form of meditation, PW is also valuable to people who wish to write and for writers facing impediments to their work. It returns you to the pleasures of pure process, reminding you why you wanted to write to begin with. Through practice you get personal with your subject matter. Over time you collect a rich storehouse of raw material that you can draw on for your writing projects.

Venue Highlights

Santa Sabina began in 1939 as a Dominican novitiate. In 1970, the Center opened its doors to spiritual seekers of all traditions. Its contemplative roots still permeate this sacred space. Its Dominican design and Tudor-Gothic architecture promote a sense of quiet and solitude and support contemplative, spiritual exploration.

The grounds of Santa Sabina and Dominican University of California, next door, are both graced by botanical gardens with an endless array of flora. Dominican has a lovely pool and fitness center available for a small fee.

The rooms at Santa Sabina are simple and comfortable with shared restrooms and showers on each hall.
