Threading the Double Bypass: An Advanced Insight Dialogue Retreat

About This Event

The spiritual bypass avoids the pain of the world by retreat into meditation. The psychological bypass avoids the pain of losing the world by denying the possibility of awakening. In this program we will bring together the liberating power of silent vipassana and insight dialogue meditation to touch the living experience of denial and awakening. The word “awakening” here sounds like more course description hyperbole. It’s not. Skillful use of both “tracing back the radiance” and “tracking the radiance” bring access to the mind’s luminosity in both individual and relational meditation. The skillful balance of meditative qualities, Buddhadhamma, and relationship, brought together in a retreat environment, can help us to see clearly when the mind checks out internally (not knowing), when mindfulness is established externally (aware), and when our luminosity, and the reciprocal radiance of others, is experienced. This is a basis for a whole life path.

Learning Intentions:

To learn how the grit of life so easily results in retreat into ignorance and selfishness, and specific ways to meet this movement with intentional practices of Dhamma wisdom and effacement; to explore the role and power of relatedness to amplify ignorance, mindfulness, and luminosity; to expand our view of mind and path beyond well-established mindfulness and be skillfully aware of the double bypass; and to touch, remember, and live with the mind’s intrinsic luminosity.

Noble Silence and Mindful Speech:

Insight dialogue will be practiced throughout this program. With the exception of the first dinner and last lunch, all meals will be in noble silence.

Prerequisite:

Two Insight Dialogue or vipassana retreats of at least one week in length.

      Wakeful teacher in all experiences

I worked with Gregory on helping build a website and even during mundane conversations on the phone he was transmitting authentic presence. He was always bringing back the view of wakefulness in everyday life. I really appreciated this and hope to attend a longer retreat with him some day.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

I am an oncology nurse and a few long time patients have died recently. I need to rejuvenate and return to my breath! Elizabeth
