About This Event
New Horizons Phase III is the integrative, conceptual complement to Living Alive Phases I and II.
This exciting program is an invitation to complement and integrate your learning in Come Alive, the Living Alive Phase programs, or other adventures in personal growth. In this program you will dig deeply into the intellectual and philosophical underpinnings of The Haven's work. At the same time you will closely examine your own patterns of thought and behaviour and consider the implications and challenges of self-responsible, relational living in the contemporary world.
The program is intended both for people wanting to further their own personal growth and for health professionals, teachers and other “people helpers” wanting to broaden and deepen their theoretical framework and skills.
Some of the areas we will cover are:
The Haven: our history and the fundamentals of our approach to growth and experiential education.
Highlights of Western Psychology, especially the psychodynamic and humanistic / existential traditions reflected in Haven approaches.
Classical Chinese (Five Elements) Medicine. The philosophy of acupuncture and Chinese Medicine, including its emotional and spiritual aspects, offers a different perspective on life and the application of healing practices to one’s self and to others.
The Body and its Energy. The theory and practice of various body-oriented therapies, including Haven-style body and breath work, introduces participants to concepts and experiences of energy blockage and release.
Other Methods for Change. The theory and practice of gestalt, psychodrama, communication skills and group dynamics. This will be useful both to those who work with people as helpers and in participants’ own growth process.
Living in the Contemporary World. Readings, presentations, film and experiences will provide material for discussions. Participants can use one another as “sounding boards” to help clarify and share their ideas and assumptions and make choices about how to live.
The program consists of daily presentation and discussion sessions, skills practice, smaller group time, plus reading and films. Learning is both conceptual and experiential.
If you have have already taken New Horizons, you're invited to drop in for sections of the program! The schedule is organized so that you can concentrate for several days on topics such as Haven-style bodywork or the Chinese Five Elements. Talk to the registrars ((contact info blocked) (contact info blocked) x1) for timing and cost.
Although it is highly recommended to take this program following the Living Alive Phases, it can be taken at any time, bearing in mind individual needs, requirements and capabilities.
We recommend taking the complete 25-day program at one time. If this is not possible, participants can take the program in two parts, Parts A and B. Part A must be taken before Part B.
Repeat Discount: Any participant who has already completed Living Alive Phase I, Living Alive Phase II or New Horizons Phase III can repeat the same program for the full 25 days, and receive a $1000 discount. Contact the registrars for more information (contact info blocked) x 1).
This reading list is intended to help you to start the process before you reach the session room. The books have been chosen to give you a wide invitation to explore the big questions, to stretch your thinking, to bump into your own limitations as you learn new ideas. We strongly encourage reading as many as you can, even if it means browsing through them to get a ‘feeling’ of what we are going to explore. You won’t be sorry.
The Illuminated Heart, Wong and McKeen. A must, as it provides a good overview of many concepts.
Being: A Manual for Life and Joining: The Relationship Garden, Wong and McKeen. The basic texts for The Haven's approach.
Traditional Acupuncture: The Law of the 5 Elements, Dianne Connelly.
Civilization and its Discontents, Sigmund Freud.
Situation Ethics, Joseph Fletcher.
Denial of Death, Ernest Becker.
When the Body Says No, Gabor Mate.
Eastern Body, Western Mind, Anodea Judith.
Compassion and Self Hate, Theodore Rubin.
Body, Self and Soul, Jack Rosenberg.
No Boundary, Ken Wilber. Or, any of his titles.
Vibrational Medicine, Richard Gerber.
Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology, Daniel Siegel.
Free Your Breath, Free Your Life, Dennis Lewis.
Current Psychotherapies, Raymond J. Corsini. Older editions are less expensive and fine for our purposes.
Venue HighlightsWith rooms by quiet coastline waters and rustic cabins tucked away among the trees, you will feel far from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Our property and facilities are designed to support our program participants and facilitate the delivery of our educational programs. Although we may not be able to offer all of the luxuries that you may associate with a resort hotel, we do offer the basics and a wonderful natural environment where you can enjoy quiet comfort.
AccommodationsThunderbird dormitory is our most economical option. Each dorm pod accommodates up to 6 people, and each pod has its own washroom. Bunks are single over single, with extra-long mattresses. Dorm pods are separated by gender. The Thunderbird dormitory is only available for participants registered in a program at The Haven. From July to mid-August, the dorms are reserved for our Youth Programs.
Basic rooms are simply furnished, comfortable and economical. They have two singles or one double bed, ensuite, no TV. Basic rooms are designed to be shared by two or three people, with beds in the same room and a shared bathroom. A Basic room may also be booked as a private room.
Forest View rooms are nestled in attractive forested areas of The Haven property. Larger than our Basic rooms, Forest View rooms are designed to be shared by two or three people, with beds in the same room, a TV and private bathroom. A Forest View room may also be booked as a private room.
Ocean View rooms offer spacious, well-equipped and comfortable accommodation looking out over the beach and waters of Taylor Bay. There is a TV in each room, a full kitchen or kitchenette, and private bathroom. Most Ocean view rooms have a deck. Although Ocean View rooms are usually booked as private accommodations, you may be able to share an Ocean View room if you and another program participant both request to be each other's roommate.
Many people find that having a roommate enhances The Haven experience. For some, it's the start of a long friendship.
If you choose Basic or Forest View shared accommodations and wish to stay with a particular person, please provide that person's name when you complete your on-line registration. Please ask your preferred roommate to do the same. Ocean View rooms may only be shared if both guests request each other by name as roommates when booking.
If you choose the Dormitory, or if you choose Basic or Forest View shared accommodations and would like us to find a roommate for you, we assign rooms as men only, women only, or gender neutral.
We make every effort to meet the needs of all our guests, but cannot guarantee specific rooms.

Experiential, universal, revelational about relational and self knowledge. Skilled experienced facilitators. Both times I’ve gone it has left me with deep connections in a short time and I continue to stay I. Touch with those co-participants. Food is hearty, delicious, and plentiful. Grounds are peaceful. I look forward to my next course and my next reunion with newfound friends.

Our 15 year old son just completed Teens Alive (1-3) for the second time, and loved it. The environment is so nurturing and transformative - I really can't say enough about how grateful I am to have this program as a support during these years when parenting can be TOUGH. Our son is navigating high school with confidence, and making mature and thoughtful decisions - we definitely see him process his experiences in a new way and love what we are seeing. His communication with us is more open and productive, and we look forward to him navigating the rest of his teen years with his hands on the reigns. He is looking forward to next year's program and has plans to become an intern in the future as well.

The Haven is beautifully set on the waterfront on Gabriola Island. I wasn't sure what to expect at this workshop. I was hoping I would find more confidence in using my voice as I have been confident in speaking in public but deathly afraid of singing in public! What I found was a very safe space to explore making all kinds of sound from humming and babble to overtone chanting and yes...singing. Leah was an excellent and gentle guide and the acoustics of our meeting space were amazing. I would recommend The Haven for anyone wanting to get away from their regular routine and explore their inner world. I will go back for more!

Great Journey to the very centre of myself. I love all the Haven programs and this one was amazing, too.

I hugely benefited from learning new communications models at the Haven. I feel received and empowered around myself and my emotions and can now communicate them effectively. You don't have to be a yogi or spiritual to come to the Haven. You just have to be a person ready to connect to their authentic self. I loved the scientific, evidence based, psych and counselling type approach of the retreat. The instructors and assistants leading our program were so knowledgeable and helpful. They were all fully present and gave amazing guidance. It was also amazing to do this challenging personal work in a group setting where everyone was themselves and ok being vulnerable. Every single person made authentic, meaningful connections during this retreat, including myself. Having opportunity to work in a larger group and smaller group setting was nice. Plus the grounds at the Haven are beautiful and it was so nice to be next to the ocean.
