Star Arts Retreat

  • Rye, NH, USA
  • Ongoing

Event Highlights

  • At Star Arts we have a variety of activities from morning til night. We exercise, socialize, dine, walk and play together.
  • For those inclined to take a class, attendees spend two hours each morning in the workshop of their choice: music, writing, drama, photography, dance, and visual arts (both fine art and and an artisan workshop).
  • Our selection of workshops changes every year. We recruit artist/instructors from around the country to spend the week with us at Star Island and share their unique skills with us. You can sample workshops at the beginning of the week and choose the course that resonates with you. We share our visual and performance art on Friday with the Star Arts community.

Star Arts is a week-long creative retreat on beautiful Star Island, ten miles off the coast of New Hampshire. Star Arts is a healthy and inspiring week of creative workshops, well-balanced communal meals, yoga and singing opportunities in an embracing community.

Sunday: Starts with our wonderful Wake-Up Singers followed by stretching, exercise and coffee on the porch. Then it’s a hot and hearty breakfast (check out the oatmeal bar) and then it’s on to the workshop sampler. We have seven workshops (including a new hands-on artisan workshop in 2020) and you can check out three of them on Sunday morning to see if one strikes your fancy. Sunday ends with an evening of storytelling, followed by (optional) candlelit chapel.

Monday through Friday: The workshops take place for two hours every morning – and then you are on your own to choose from the many afternoon and evening activities, or just relax. Meals are made from scratch and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served family style every day and (optional) chapel services are held in the morning and evening.

About This Event

Star Island is a creative, spiritual place to call home. At the Star Arts creative retreat we nurture this spirit and provide activities for professional artists and amateurs alike. All experience levels are welcome. Sometimes we expand on current talents; sometimes we take risks on new frontiers.

Arts participants are invited to spend their mornings in the workshop of their choice: music, writing, drama, photography, visual arts, or dance. Other activities include poetry readings, choirs and music jams, storytelling, art and talent shows, Qi Gong, yoga, quiet contemplation, morning chapel, afternoon skill-sharing, and other spontaneous adventures to nourish creativity, curiosity and spiritual reflection. Find your muse – or simply sit on the rocks and read. Do everything – or do nothing.

“Positive feelings all around... The island is an amazingly beautiful environment in which to create.”

Venue Highlights

Star Island is one of the nine Isles of Shoals located seven miles off the coast of New Hampshire and Maine. All are welcome to explore the island for a day, enjoy a meal, spend the night, or attend a conference. Star is owned and operated by the nonprofit Star Island Corporation.

Star has a storied history: in the 1600’s it was the busiest fishing port on the East coast. In the 1800’s, artists, writers and intellectuals flocked to the Oceanic Hotel - one of the last of the original Grand Hotels. For the last 100 years, Star Island has offered an all-inclusive summer camp experience for families and hosted a wide variety of themed conferences and personal retreats.

Whether you find yourself mesmerized by the sunset in a rocking chair on the porch, exploring Gosport Harbor in a kayak, or learning about our innovative environmental programs, Star Island is unforgettable.

Life on Star Island is comfortable, but not modern in part due to our commitment to conservation of resources. Living quarters in the main hotel and cottages have shared bathroom facilities for each floor. Each bed is made with sheets, an acrylic blanket, a wool blanket, a bedspread, and a pillow. Extra blankets and pillows are available upon request. Each room is also supplied with a washcloth, hand towel, bath towel, and small bar of soap for each person. Although all rooms have electricity, not all rooms are equipped with electrical outlets.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

I am an oncology nurse and a few long time patients have died recently. I need to rejuvenate and return to my breath! Elizabeth
