Grace O Malley Retreat in the west of Ireland.

  • 463 Walnut Drive, Amherstburg, ON, Canada
  • May 6 - 13, 2020 (8 days)

Event Highlights

  • A visit to Clare Island is one of the many highlights of this unique retreat.
  • Our guide Dr. Nadia Ramatour has been researching the Grace O Malley story for over twenty years.Who better to tell the story than Nadia?
  • Grace O`Malley was a tyrant of the ocean, clan chieftain, mother, wife, survivor and brilliant politician. Her deeds are now obscured by time, but the legacy of her mastery survives in the ruined monuments and the folk-consciousness on Clare Island and beyond.

Schedule

The historical story behind Grace O’Malley is a powerful one.

Pirate Queen, a brave crusader and original feminist hero, Gráinne Ní Mháille (Grace O’Malley in Gaelic), sneered in the face of tradition and took to the seas where her fierce nature defied the unforgiving depths of the Atlantic.
We will follow Grace’s story around the west of Ireland, from Clew bay to Claire Island.

Clew Bay has, according to tradition, 365 islands, one for every day of the year. It’s probably the most beautiful bay in Ireland, and the views of it from all around Westport are spectacular. The biggest, Clare Island, guards the entrance to the sheltered bay and is home to 130 people. With its Blue Flag beach and many historical and archaeological sites, Clare island is accessed by a short ferry ride. Most of the others in the bay are uninhabited, although a few brave souls cling to the age-old tradition of living on a small island all year round.

Temple house will be our home for the week. It is a classical Georgian manor set on a private estate of over 1,000 acres. This luxury country house in County Sligo, Ireland is overlooking a 13th century lakeside castle of the Knights Templar. The Perceval family home since 1665, the present manor was redesigned in 1864 and enjoys the authentic and unpretentious luxury country house. Agenda

Our days will be framed with a yoga class followed by brunch.
Grace O'Malley leads the way, on our first day away.
A visit to Claire Island and Clew bay will start our week; Following the story of one of Ireland's fearless leaders.

"Who thinketh herself no small lady" - Sir Nicholas Malby on meeting Grace O'Malley.

The Sea Queen will be followed by Queen Maeve, the queen of Connacht.
On a clear day the burial karn of Queen Maeve is visible from the grounds of Temple house.
Queen Maeve’s trail is a sacred, magical place in County Sligo . A special place made sacred by our stone age ancestors and mythologized by their Iron age descendants - and by a modern poet.

The beauty and mythology associated with the Sligo landscape were the great inspiration for Nobel Prize winning poet W.B. Yeats. As a dominant regional landmark, Knocknarea is particularly prominent in his work, being featured in a total of seven poems.

“The wind has bundled up the clouds high over Knocknarea and thrown the
thunder on the stones for all that Maeve can say.” - W.B. Yeats

The Atlantic Ocean is the star of the week.
As our travels are along the Wild Atlantic way, we would be remiss not to spend some time at the beach.
A luxurious steaming bath of fresh seawater and wild organic seaweed will follow our ramble on Strandhill beach.

Seaweed baths have been a tradition in Ireland for hundreds of years and Ireland’s only indigenous spa therapy.

Menu/Cuisine

Recent recipients of Georgina Campbell's Best Breakfast in a Country House Award, we believe that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We make our own granola, and are often asked for the recipe. We make our own Irish soda bread too. There is home-made rhubarb compote from our walled garden, creamy Greek-style Irish yogurt plus the usual cereals. Or perhaps you would prefer to go straight to the main course - the Full Irish. Thick rashers with just a little crispiness around the edge, gluten-free sausages, black and white pudding (if you are man enough) and sweet tomatoes topped off with free-range eggs with an amazing bright orange yoke. Freshly brewed tea and French press coffee set you up for the day too.
