Typical day
After our morning warm-up we enjoy a nutrient dense breakfast. We then move on to the the world of grappling fundamentals, combining theory with practice. After lunch we’ll dive deeper in our practice moving onto games and plays exploring ways to communicate in grappling language. After dinner there’s plenty of time to practice and exchange what you’ve learned during open mat.

Grappling: Primal Communication

Momentum presents GRAPPLING RETREAT, a 7-day immersion into the physical language of grappling arts.

A deep dive into the fundamentals of Momentum’s 3 layer approach:

Body, Movement Skills and Communication for a safe introduction into the world of grappling.


Grappling is a primal form of physical communication which is deeply inherent in all humans since the age of time. Being physical with one another creates a pure and honest form of transmitting energy, intent, knowledge and self expression which goes way beyond verbal communication. When we grapple we express to each other whether we want to collaborate or compete, connect or disconnect, help or hurt. Being unable to express ourselves physically creates a separation from our physical nature and all we’re left with is our mental interactions which have no true impact when not embodied. Everything in this life is experienced through the body. Learn to grapple and you will perceive and live the human experience in its full depth while opening a gateway to dormant layers of your animal psyche and warrior spirit.

The process follows a hierarchical approach in understanding how your body works and how to properly navigate it. We then move into the learning of grappling as an entire movement system. We will draw from contemporary grappling arts such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Sumo to create a strong comprehension of grappling as a fundamental language and how we participate, survive and thrive in it. This interactive practice will also allow us to learn about ourselves and others. We will also go beyond movement and explore the psychology, instincts and philosophy of a martial art practice and how it influences all layers of life.


The retreat is designed for beginners with no prior grappling knowledge and anyone who wishes to get into grappling in a safe way and go beyond only the technical side of it. Anyone with a healthy body and deep yearning for a primal challenge can learn this combative movement discipline. There are no minimum requirements in physical fitness or performance, only an open mind to study a unique perspective on one of the most interesting disciplines of all times. Grappling is a combat art and risk of injury is always there. However when taught and prepared correctly one can enjoy this art safely all the way into the senior ages of life.

Extra Time

Enjoy your extra time venturing around the island by scooter at your disposal or unwinding during Thai massage (we offer it unlimitedly at the retreat). The island also offers abundant options to kick back and relax: steam sauna with ice baths, sandy beaches, high view point bars and an incredible culinary variety.

Venue Highlights

Set in a lush tropical coconut grove, just 5 minutes’ walk from sunset lagoon Hin-Kong, Villa Baan Thamarchat is the perfect setting for our retreats. According to your needs and budget you can choose between master, private or shared bedroom. Equipped with a private ‘Sala’ and adjoining pool it really ticks all the boxes. The luxurious living areas are all open, equipped with huge sofas, perfect to enjoy the surrounding nature, sunset, the beautiful company and the meals.


Master bedroom has a King size bed, a private bathroom and separate toilet, air-conditioning, fan, mosquito net and a safe box.

Start the day in style with morning coffee and a beautiful view will be awaiting you. What else is on the menu? All meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) are designed to support the demands of a strong physical practice. Everything is prepared by our private chef and we only use the best quality ingredients. All meals have vegan and vegetarian options as well.


Traveling by Plane
There is no direct plane landing on Koh Phangan. The easiest and shortest way to fly the neighboring island Koh Samui and then take the ferry to Koh Phangan Thongsala Pier (30 min way). The cheaper but longer option is to fly to Surat Thani Airport. From there you'll need to take a bus and ferry to Koh Phangan Thongsala Pier (the trip all together will take around 4 hours). We will provide pick up from Thongsala Pier at designated times (depending on group’s arrival) and provide transport to villa.

Traveling by Train
This is a much cheaper alternate from flying. However, the journey can be quite rough and long. We only recommend traveling this way if you’re on a tight budget or really up for an adventure! Simply take a train from Bangkok to Surat Thani. On arrival at Surat Thani railway station, shuttle bus meets the train and takes you to the Don Sak ferry terminal. The bus is included if you’ve purchased the train+ferry fare. Ferries sail every hour from Don Sak to Koh Samui, crossing time 1.5 hours. Some ferries continue to Koh Phangan. You can buy the combined train+ferry tickets at Bangkok Hualamphong station reservations office, or online for a small handling fee.

Group transport from/to Thong Sala Pier to/from the venue is included to the package.
