Advice on putting a deposit down for a venue
When you decide to run a retreat somewhere, they usually require you to put down a deposit. That can feel really risky since you don’t know how many people are going to register for the retreat.
When booking a room block, try to be conservative in your estimate of how many people will come. Also, having a good relationship with the owners of the venue makes a big difference. Once I had to cancel a a bunch of rooms I had booked because of the swine flu scare since 70% of my participants cancelled at the last minute. The owners, who I had a long term relationship with, were really understanding, and didn’t charge me for those rooms.
