Community and Yoga Practice

Community is the key for me. There is a lot of fear and judgement and criticism in the world. Whenever I teach a retreat, or even a yoga class, I have students introduce themselves to each other. My intention is to build community wherever I go. As a society, we’ve become so focussed on doing our work that we typically don’t even know our neighbours. My classes and retreat offer more than a yoga practice, they become a place to connect to the community. A friend of mine says that yoga studios have taken the social role of bars and churches in the 21st century. I think that we have begun to realize that all of us suffer. On retreats, we can see that even the people who seem to have it all together, they struggle too. Vulnerability is a crucial part of walking the path to healing. In community, we become witnesses for each other’s vulnerability, as well as our strength.
