Carl McColman

About us

Carl McColman writes about the spiritual life. He is the author of many books on Celtic spirituality, Christian mysticism, and contemplative prayer, including The Big Book of Christian Mysticism (2010) and An Invitation to Celtic Wisdom (2018). Carl’s work is characterized by an optimistic, expansive understanding of spirituality, rooted in Christianity while embracing the wisdom of the world’s contemplative traditions. In his own words, “I am passionate about helping people to embody creative, joyful lives of love and service, formed by prayer, silence, and the wisdom of the saints and mystics.” Carl learned the practice of contemplative prayer at the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation. He is a professed Lay Cistercian — a layperson under the guidance of Trappist monks. He regularly speaks, teaches and conducts retreats on contemplative Christian practice. He has a blog on the Patheos “Contemplative” page and is the co-host of the “Encountering Silence” podcast. Learn more at https://www.carlmccolman.com/.

Why Retreat?

We asked people why they go on retreat, here's what they said:

Because I sometimes work up to 16 hours a day, and need time to stop and breathe. Mary

Retreat Guru's Vision

We believe human beings are innately wise, strong and kind. This wisdom, although not always experienced, is always present. Going on retreat is a beautiful way to reconnect to our basic sanity and health. Our aspiration at Retreat Guru is to inspire people to experience authentic retreats and reconnect with their innate wisdom, strength and kindness.
