My yoga journey began in 2003 while I was in university and I think it was love at first sight. It was then that I started attending Vinyasa classes and I was hooked from the very first class. It didn’t take long to know I was experiencing physical benefits: increased strength, flexibility and balance and in the beginning, it was that physical stuff that kept me coming back. I knew as well, there was something else happening but was unable to explain or even put my thumb on. I later came to know it as my personal rhythm and it is the awareness of that mysterious rhythm that makes me a lifer. I completed my university and moved to Elk Ridge to start my grownup life and career as a high school teacher in Prince Albert, knowing yoga would be forever woven into the fabric. In 2009, along with my mom, we deepened our yoga practice through a 300 hour yoga teacher training program. It was a life changing experience that made our close relationship even closer. Most recently I have embarked upon the study of iRest Yoga Nidra, expanding my understanding and my personal experience of the benefits of meditation and mindfulness. This was particularly timely as I personally reaped the benefits during the birth of my second son. This is yet another step in my journey in this adventure of being a human! There is so much to learn, know and experience. I know I will never know it all, but I have a lifetime to study. I consider myself as much or more a student as an instructor, constantly exploring and taking in new things. Every day and every stage of life brings new challenges and lessons and my practice continues to evolve as my life as wife, mother, daughter, sister, teacher, student, and explorer unfolds. When I am not practicing or teaching yoga and meditation, you can find me chasing after and playing with my 5 year old and 3 year old boys and 1 year old girl. I love creating things, whether it be trying a new recipe, painting or weaving, or digging in the dirt. I try to see beauty in the mundane, everyday things and spend a little time each day thinking about and being grateful for this miracle of being alive. STYLE OF YOGA Roxanne is a certifying teacher of iRest Meditation. IRest is a healing and transformative practice based on the ancient teaching of Yoga Nidra, but adapted for the modern world. It is an evidence based practice of deep relaxation and meditative inquiry that releases negative emotions and thought patterns, calms the nervous system, and develops an inner sanctuary of well-being and ease. iRest has been studied clinically and been shown to effectively reduces symptoms of depression, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, traumatic brain injury, chemical dependency and PTSD. More generally, it is a wonderful practice for processing the stress of daily life building resilience and self-awareness. WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THIS METHOD OF YOGA? Roxanne has a unique style of teaching that incorporates many styles of yoga. She is constantly learning from different teachers and trying new and different ways of moving the body. Having a basis in alignment has allowed her to experiment and know when to follow the rules and when to break the rules, if there really are any rules in yoga! Her main focus in teaching asana is the really feel the body and all its layers. Her classes are challenging for all levels, but more importantly intuitive and playful.
